Gen 1 oil filter assembly

Does anyone know if a Gen 2 oil filter assembly will fit onto a Gen 1 block? Aside from the accessiblity of the filter was there other reasons for the change between the two blocks?

The bolt pattern for the Gen 2 oil filter adapter does not fit on the Gen 1 block. I believe one is a three bolt, the other two bolt into the block. Evidence - look at the different gaskets.
