I was looking at my Gen I motor manual for Torque Specifications, it says:

Torque to 30ft pounds on the first round and then add 1/4 turn on the second. This does not sound correct. I was expecting 60 to 90 pounds total. Do all the manuals state this procedure?

That is called a torque to yeild spec. It is used on heavy equipment among other things. You should torque the head bolts to 110 ft lbs as the final torque. The manual I have says 90 ft lbs but that is not enough for a good seal. Do not lube the threads, install the bolts dry.

Steve-Indy,

Thanks for the link. This is more like it. Yes I am using the Multi-Layer gasket.

Jack B talks about replacing the head bolts. Any problems with re-using the head bolts?

Jerry,

Quick reminder - do not rotate the crank or yutn over the engine with the heads off as you risk breaking the seal on the Gen 1 wet cylinder liners.

Good luck with the change out of the gaskets.
