VIPERSPEED’s KNOX WINS HIS FIRST NATIONAL RACE IN T1 AT TWS

Competing in just his second SCCA National race, ViperSpeed’s newest driver, Texan Dan Knox, drove his Viper to victory in the T1 class of the SCCA’s Southwest Division this past weekend at Texas World Speedway (TWS) in College Station, TX. Knox’s black Viper, which bears a remarkable similarity to the Viper of his mentor, Bobby Archer, performed flawlessly despite the punishing heat and humidity that took its toll on both cars and drivers at the event.

For this SCCA event, the familiar 1.8 mile track configuration was used and the track was set-up to run in the usual counterclockwise manner. Outfitted with a cool suit under his driving suit, Knox had the fastest lap (just over 1:15) of the four T1 cars in qualifying, and thus won the pole for the T1 class. A second Viper, driven by Bob Ferstl, and two Porsches were the other T1 cars in the field of 23 GT1, GT2, GT3, T1, and AS cars.

Starting behind several GT-1 cars, Dan got off to a good start in the race and was able to distance himself from the other T1 cars. Midway through the race, he and other leaders began lapping the slower cars which always seems to provide a few dicey moments. Despite a slick track due to the heat, Dan was able to get through the traffic without incident. To their credit, the drivers of many of the slower cars did a nice job of watching their mirrors and letting the leaders go through. After finishing a respectable fourth in his first National race in T1 two weeks ago, Dan was extremely excited about winning his first National race this past weekend and is very much looking forward to his next race.

Knox, who is the newest member of the Bobby Archer Motorsports / ViperSpeed team, will be competing on August 17-18 against teammate Dr. Deborah Loth at Hallett Motor Speedway in an SCCA National event. Loth is looking for one more victory before she turns her attention to the SCCA Valvoline Runoffs at the Mid-Ohio Sportscar Course. Knox is himself making a bid to qualify for the Runoffs by competing in three more races over the next six weeks, including an SCCA National at Mid-Ohio on August 24-25.
