 Anybody knows where I can get a front license plate braket? I went to some stores but what they have is kind of ugly and I have to drill a hole in the front grill. I don't wan't to drill a hole as much as possible but I have to obey the law and in New Jersey I need to have my plate install in the front. Dealership is no help either. Anyone who done it any other way?

Ric,
I bought mine from PartsRack. It costs somewhere around $50 or so. It fits really nice/snug and takes just 2 seconds to remove the entire unit or put it back on.

There is one available where you do not have to drill any holes. I have one & it uses the existing bolts on your front bumper.

I've got the Partsrack bracket also. The rubber "clamps" hold on tight. No rubbing at high speeds. And you can take it off when you want..takes 5 seconds!!! :headbang:

What a shame to have to put one on the front of these cars. Ugly! Personally, I'm taking the chance with no front plate. To me it's worth the possible ticket cost to not have one. At least the first time. Might be a "fix it" ticket though, where you have to go prove that it is done before the citation goes away. Hmmm.

What is the purpose of a front license plate anyway? There is already one on the back...why two?

It's the law here in New York and I have never seen a Viper with a front plate. Even Vette's don't put them on. I'd say a cop has to be in a real foul mood to pull a Viper over for that tickytack infraction.

Doesn't help that Kalifornica is almost bankrupt. Seems to be a lot of pressure out there to enforce even the tikiest of tacky infractions.

I got a ticket a couple years ago in my home town. Had to put bracket on and take digital photo to court for them to dismiss case. Still have plate on and it looks terrible. IMO ruins the car. It's also funny how none of the ****** cars in town with no front plate seem to get tickets.

The answer to the puzzle is red-light cameras. And to an extent, laser guns.

Ullyses: Forgive my ignorance...but what is that all about??

Until this post came up, I had never thought about the front license plate issue. But this made me think, hmmmm, why even have a front plate? That's why I asked. Cops pull up behind us (pull us over), then read our plates and call in to check for other issues. So I still would wonder why there is a use for a front plate.

Has anyone out there been pulled over JUST for not haveing a front plate?

I made my own plate holder for my Viper. I bought a black frame and back plate holder at Pep Boys. Then bought some Velcro at the hardware store. I first but the frame, plate and back together, cut down the screws flush with the back plate with a Dremel tool, hot glued foam to the back plate that I had already (cut sections of foam tubing used to insulate pipes)and put the Velcro together to make about a 15" strap. Loop the strap through the back of the plate and place the plate on the higher section of the front bumper. Total cost, about $8.00 and can be easily removed.

Until this post came up, I had never thought about the front license plate issue.

The red light cameras take a picture of the front of the car so that they can capture the plate and the face of the driver. Instant "Gotcha" in court. The plate is a good reflective surface for the radar at the red light cameras.

On the same note, it's a good reflective surface for Laser. SO if you are coming at a speed trap, they just point the laser at your plate. It's easier to catch you speeding when you are coming at them, then after you pass them. You've already spotted them at that point and would have slowed down. There are other targets on the front that they can hit, but the plate is the best.
