So I had a chance to finally take out the car today and head over to my family house to show my dad the new car. I let him take a test drive after letting him know to take it easy and this happens. To much power for him and he hit a pole. Luckily no one got hurt. Now I need to see what's the best way to approach this being that my dad was the one driving the car. Would it be better to make the claim to my insurance company or should he go through his insurance company. Also I would like to take the car to a viper specialist. I'm in SoCal so if someone can refer a shop. THANKS

My dad doesn't want to ride in my car with me, let alone drive it. Not that that has anything to do with your post.

I'm glad he's okay. I'd make him claim it so it's not a strike against you (pun alert).

Year? If you hit a pole and damaged the nose, h-lights and hood on a Gen 1 or 2 it'll be a write-off.

Minor damage? Your insurance, his insurance? Choices?

Send a message to your regional club pres. Join the VCA so that you can take advantage of it's benefits.

DC performance would be the place to call in So Cal. I'll send a PM.

Glad to hear everyone is OK. I noticed PS1's on Viper...are those the originals? They become rock hard and dangerous with age. Based on the pics it looks like your hood are toast. You may have frame damage based on the way that rear wheel is cocked. I would say it's totaled. Try giving JonB at Partsrack a call. He's been able to help many Viper owners with their insurance companies in these types of situations.

"I let ____ take a test Drive" seldom ends well.

As noted above, we have been able to help lots folks in your insurance predicament. Do you and dad have the same insurance company?

And also as noted above, DCPerformance is a great place to start in your area.

Talk to Jon B definitely. He is the man! He will take care of you but remember to take care of him afterwards. I can tell you he helped me through my insurance claim, helped me recieve more, then turned around and helped me with the purchase of my new car. I told him the Viper I was looking at and he said he would call me right back. Even though I had already agreed on a price to purchase the new Viper he called me back and saved me additional money, a significant amount. All of this done before I was a VCA member and before I even spent 100 bucks with him. Joined VCA because of his service!

The Insurance adjuster just came to see the car and it looks like its a total loss. I'm just waiting for the value on the car? Depending on the buy back price I might fix it so I will contact you on some parts.

Sorry to see this David, but at least your Dad is ok.. I could have told you looking at the pictures it would be a loss....That's a $20K+ hood on that car. Add in the other components and you've easily exceeded 3/4 of the cost of the car.

Take the money and get yourself into a new Viper ASAP!

I can't see the pics because I am not a member of the other site. Are we talking about a Gen 1/2 OEM hood? $20,000!!! Seriously?!?!?

Unless you live in canada where my insurance adjuster told me $28,000 for a hood and nearly $6,000 for a front fascia.

yes, it is a Gen2 hood. Through Dodge, the hood is in excess of $20K. Damage to the hood of a Gen2 serious enough to warrant replacement of that panel is almost guaranteed to mean an insurance write-off.

EXACTLY.....and as you know, yet another VA Viper bit the dust just last weekend, totalled as a likley result of Mis-matched tire issues. Turns out they had PS2 fronts, and n****to-rears, This results in assymetric cornering and handling and braking in an emergency. Can be OK on track where you expect it, but NOT if you get taken by surprise and have to go evasive for a dog, deer, or a *****. SURPRISE!
