The gauge jumps near the red mark at startup even after sitting for days. After driving the motor doesn't overheat and the fan operates properly but the gauge stays near or on the red.

What do you think? Bad sensor? Bad gauge? Bad connection?

The sensor is the easiest fix. I'd try that first.

Chuck, check the wire near the engine, it may be grounding out on the block or something.

I have the same problem, except mine goes all the way to the right. Please post if you find what caused it (I can't find anything wrong with the wire near the block, but then again I probably don't know what to look for). Good luck.

Unplug the sensor, if the coolant temp goes all the way down, replace the sensor.

Coolant Temp Sensor, Part # 4848110, $50.

7/8" Socket to remove 4 wire sensor under upper coolant neck.
