Ever since I've had my Viper, the turn signal refuses to auto cancel. It's not a big deal and one of these days I'll get in there and see what's wrong. It got me to thinking though, Every car seems to have a mechanical turn signal mechanism to cancel the blinker. Why not have a smart turn signal that you could turn on the same way you do now but it would have a shaft encoder that looked for a certain number of degrees of steering wheel turn and then canceled itself. It could ring a little chime to let you know it worked. The degree of turn for cancel could be adjusted by the driver. It would also seem that the degree of turn of the steering wheel information available from this kind of shaft encoder might be useful as an input for a smart traction control system.
Well, there you go, the idea is out and now I'll never get rich from it.
