I replaced the factory rear speakers in my GTS with JBL 8 inch subs and the other factory speakers with MB Quart. Much better sound.

I did the same search and found one with the speakers facing backwards.

The problem is the limited space on the sides. I don't think you can get enough area using MDF. Fiberglass might work but would be a lot more work and mess.

Where are you going to put your amp if a speaker is there?

I am running two amps, XM, CD Changer, and a single 10" sub. I used a factory JL enclosure. Fits PERFECT in the back. I kept my spare tire and the box can easily be lifted out.

Gotta get a couple of big subs in the Viper for more impact while watching those Jurassic Park DVDs right??? Nonetheless, Cartman says, "Kick asp!"
