If you think your having a cooling system problem[running hotter then normal] go see your Dealer. Print out ALL Posts on "Water Pumps&over heating" and bring them with you! If that does not convince them to pull your pump to check it, then tell the Dealer to call me-THE WIZARD and I'll explain LIFE to them!!

My 96' GTS never overheats or gets hot even with spirited driving. It still has the original radiator fan assembly. Is the problem with just the 00' & 01'?

bonestock,
get this... I called my dealer just to "chat" about the problem
and mentioned how because of the circumstances might be a good idea to pull the water pump just to check it.
he told me fine but if he finds it is not broke I have to pay the labor.

I said I will do more tests and wait for the service bulletin

OK,
tried same thing as BONE STOCK with some variation:

warmed up to 190
1st gear - 5000 RPM
2nd gear - 4000 RPM
3rd gear - 3000 RPM for ~ 2min.
4th gear - cool down to 1500 RPM

3rd gear completion temp was at 3rd hash mark at center
4th gear cool down temp was at middle of 2nd and third hash mark at center.

Hit stop and go traffic (the real test) but it pretty much stayed around the three hash marks at center.

temp was about 75 Deg F outside with a bit of humidity.

I was totally expecting to hit the last hash mark before red, but it never happened. Burped my cooling system before I did this, but didn't really hear too much trapped air escape.

So, I concluded that I don't have the dreaded bad water pump, but hitting that last hash mark before red the other day has me puzzled.

okay here is my test and results:

1st gear - 5000 RPM
2nd gear - 5500 RPM
3rd gear - 5000 RPM for ~ 1min.
4th gear - cool down to 1500 RPM

it did go past the 3rd line | | | but did not hit the 4th |
when upshifting to 5th and coasting it went right back down between lines 2 and 3

so i think it safe to say my water pump is fine..
BUT i realized a new problem with my 2001 that will be my next post.
