You don't need to spend a fortune on speakers. What counts is how it's tuned. I've heard stock cheap $2.00 paper cone speakers sound awesome. It's up to the tuner and how it's tuned to the vehicle.
As far as rear imaging you really have no choice but building those pods. The speakers are so low high frequencies can't get out. I don't think you'll find very many people putting empahsis on sound. The common quote is "I only hear what's under the hood" or "The only music is the one coming...
The sound stage is decent but if you really want to bring it up you need to make some tweeter pods in the A-pillars. Although I've heard some systems with horn tweeters under the dash that sounded amazing and the sound stage was at eye level. That was a competition car though.
