OK..same issue here and I am a whopping 5'7", 160 lbs
Took a sweatshirt, similar color to the seats, folded it up and placed in the small of my back. Eliminated the gap you refer to...try before you make any expensive changes...

Just did it as well, and I second Vegas Guy's recomendation. The Corsa instructions say the wheel well path is an alternative...go that way first. I still have no clue how anyone goes through the vent hole and gets that bolt.
30 minutes per sill is a good average...45 minutes for the first...

Sorry to hear about USAA and your claim...I had a totally different experience when a kid ran a red light and totalled my vette... passenger sued ME for a cool million...from India... USAA defended me, got a good value for my car and even got their insurance company to get my deductible back...
