Paxton belt slipping, what's the fix?

Paxton belt slipping, what\'s the fix?

My business partner just purchased a 07 Z06 two weeks ago and we decided to hit up a local shop to have the cars dynoed today.

They put mine on the dyno and all three pulls had the boost all over the place, looked like waves in an ocean. The car still pulled some great numbers! Best was 666hp 604torque Worst was 658hp 605torque. 666 is nasty though, woulda much rather had 665! :)

So anyway, what's my best option to fix this? Anybody else experience this?

Not much spread between best and worst. Makes you wonder about the gage used to determine boost.

Looks like your HP pulls are within ~1% of each other and torque is virtually the same.. It doesn't get any (deleted be me) better than that. Why are you suggesting that belt slippage and boost is an issue? More importantly, why are you defaming Paxton suggesting there's a problem and "boost is all over the place"? Post up the printout and we'll figure it out.. Good luck...

On the gen2's, a 10-rib worked by a tiny bit. The limitation was that a 10 rib belt gets within a couple of mm of the power steering rack. i haven't taken a strong look at the gen3 set-ups, but check the spacing there. if you have LOTS of space, consider a 12-rib! But on a gen2, that won't work... not without major surgery.

Defaming Paxton, are you kidding me with that? That's has to be the dumbest resposne I've read on these boards to date. :rolleyes: I think putting down the numbers the car did only helps prove that the Paxton unit on a Stock car puts down some insane numbers. :2tu: I wasn't even complaining about, what I think and the shop said, is belt slip. Just looking for something to prevent it.

They are sending me the file today of the runs and I'll post them up. All 3 runs were identical as you all stated. And who knows maybe it was their dyno.

lol, defaming paxton. That's a good one.

The belts does tend to slip a little bit at high RPM’s, I can monitor it on my AEM. It slips even more when you change the pulley sizes to up the boost. DLM makes a belt tensioner that works pretty well. I was first concerned about putting too much side load on the pulley when tightening DLM’s tensioner, but when I took apart the Paxton SC, it seamed to have big enough bearings to handle the side loading. The idler included in Paxton’s kit is another story though. It is only supported on one side, so made a solid bushing to fully support the idler. The belts still can slip a little and that may be a good thing, see my note below.

Since I run high boost I decided to make a set of cogged pulleys to eliminate the slippage altogether. I get no slippage at all and the throttle response is crisper. Just to give you an idea of how much force is being transmitted to the SC via the belts and pulleys, I was able to spin the pulley on the SC even though it has 2 keyways cut into it. The keyways had rolled out of the slot. I made the pulley out of aluminum and obviously there was too much forced for the side walls of the keyway to handle, so I am making a new one out of stainless.

So that is why some slippage is good because it will have less stress on the shaft, pulley, belt etc especially when you lift off at WOT throttle.

Wider belts will not work on the SRT, there is simply no room.

you are right, throttle response is very crisp on a gog setup. and i think if we were running alchohol funny cars, that would be a good thing. but just like you said, a litle belt slippage is better for our needs.

Unfortunately, you need a bigger belt. Or a cog set-up. the deal is that the SC itself takes ~100-150hp to spin. The problem: a belt rib is good for holding ~10-12hp MAX. so if you have an 8 rib belt, you can hold appx 96hp worth of power. minus 3% for slippage. So a wider belt OR more wrap is the only way to go. a better tensioner with more belt wrap may help too... but it's all in the physics unfortunately.

i had the same problem with belt slipping. Try the DLM belt tensioner it WILL fix the belt slip problem. Doug also sells a complte 10 rib system that works perfectly with bigger hp power cars.it cost alot more but worth every penny.

You have to keep good tension on the belt and Doug Levin's parts will fix it. I keep mine tight and watch the boost gauge and I don't see any slip at all :2tu:

Slipping belts = loss of hp

I can't believe you are all defaming paxton talking about this non existant belt slip. :) jk Johnk, had to get one more in there.

Thanks for letting me know about the tensioner, I ordered the new tensioner and their upgraded intercooler. This should really help the Paxton out quite a bit.

Fishtail: I notice you have Belanger Headers, how much did that help you with your low end HP/Torque on the Paxton. I like the peak hp I'm getting, but I would like to do something to get a little more down low.

No problem. Your car did 591 @ 5900 on the Mustang dyno at EJ's Dyno Shop, right?

Yes with about 20 miles on the car it did 591.9hp 540tq on EJ's mustant dyno. The Dynojet dyno's generally read quite a bit higher as you can tell, as the only difference on the car between the two dyno's is New Motor vs. 450 mile motor.

I absolutely love the Paxton. Great for street use. Power comes on really smooth and is fairly easy to handle as long as it's warm outside.
