Roads are usually slickest when it just begins raining. If that was the case its not surprising that you were kind of a hockey-puck as soon as you locked up.....the cars do tend to slide a long way. The only thing to do at that point is to get off the brakes and try again, gently, as many times as you can before the brakes or something else stops you.

Very sorry to hear; glad you're OK.

LOL it took less than 10 posts to blame the tires. Pretty sure your track skills will be questioned next

Wet, damp, or kinda damp, they will slide. Not even brand new tires or a bazillion track hours will prevent that.

I just bought a hood from Paul Scharf. Great condition with everything on it for $5K + $650 shipped in a crate.

On my deal I opted to not waste time haggling with the insurance company or bring in "experts." I went to a Viper knowledgable body shop and we worked out what the path forward would be. Instant results, no annoying arguing with the company you've been paying for xx years to pay you back. And then they don't want to.

Sorry to hear about your car.

I should clarify that I meant "type of tires", not "condition of tires." There was no rain, but it was moist enough that there was standing water on my deck. The car is at a classic car repair center, I am going to wait to hear what they say about the damage.

Can someone recommend a shop in my area to make the repairs if it isn't totaled. I'm 5 mins north of Annapolis MD.

Oh and no track experience here either, so blame away. I've had a WRX, Z28 SS, and kinda big turbo 240sx. 3000 miles of street driving in the Viper, some of which was in the rain as it was my daily driver for all of Nov and Dec.

Wow - Crappy tires and no 'experience'!! Next thing you know is that you'll be telling us that you're under 50...geez! You must be a fan of Obama, as well? It's either his fault or W Bush, right?

The above was sarcasm...Good luck with your search for a body shop. First ? you'll be asked when you find one is probably "This through insurance?" First time I was asked that ? (years ago, unfortunately!) I responded with "Why should that matter?"...How naive, right?

Edited to remove sarcasm. Oh and I am no socialist...

I'm 22, just graduated college, and it was a stretch to purchase this car. I might be back to driving a big turbo 240sx if it is totaled. Too bad I just sold my GT3071r...

I think it was a combination of weather/road/tires/no abs. I have been driving a none abs car for a couple years (89 240sx with a kinda big turbo RB20DET) so I have some experience/I know what to do in the situation. I am amazing at how far I slid from only traveling 40mph... It is a 7 lane intersection with 2 turn lanes each way and I ended up on the other side of it.

Where the heck was this intersection? I'm trying to think where something that big could be related to where you live. Also PM me if you need any help, I've been there and done that with a GTS and had to make the appropriate decisions regarding total or not. Also curious who is going to work on it around here.

West Street and Solomon's Island Rd. I was going west on West, Solomon's has 3 lanes going straight and 2 turning on each side, making it 8 lanes across. I ended up in front of the farthest turning lane, which is 5 lanes into the intersection.

Haven't heard from the shop yet.

I contacted Safford Chrysler Jeep Dodge of Springfield about doing the repairs. I was referred to their Viper tech, Jeff, by GTLaser for an alignment when I first bought the car (which I never did) Alignment Thread
They have experience with USAA claims and the body shop that they use is a "Direct Repair Facility" for USAA. Now I just have to get it there.

Best picture I have, doesn't look to bad here. The hood is pushed out of place. look at the gap at the head light. He hit the side of it hard enough to press his bumper support into his rad.

My suggestion would be to call your local VCA president and get their advice on the next steps. You might have already done this. I feel for you and hope the best comes out of this situation.

Tires don't cause accidents. The person driving the car does.

Regarding the damage to the car, that is easily repairable. I needed everything from the xbrace forward and working with the body shop (NOT the insurance company) we decided an acceptable path forward on used versus new on the parts, and all within budget of what the insurance company was paying.

The most important person to you right now should be the person repairing your car. You can argue to your wits end trying to milk a few hundred more dollars on your claim, getting your insurance company to pay more. But in my case, I took the matter straight to the body shop and in a matter of hours had $18K off the insurance estimate. Yes, the insurance company had $41K, and by the time I worked through it with the shop, we were down to $23K. All of this using either brand new or Viper dealer used parts, and a body shop that is a VCA sponsor. Nothing chickenship, all first rate top notch parts / paint / labor.

Did I mention that the key to your repair is the shop, not your insurance company?

Also, as they were establishing the value of the car, I have awesome records of all the mods I've done. Including several thousand pics. Three mods stand out in the insurance company evaluation:

Custom iForged wheels, full SRT / ACR brake upgrade -> I spent $13K, $0 added to value.
3.73 gears and OS Giken Superlock -> I spent $4K, they SUBTRACTED $20 from the car's value.
Custom seat covers -> I spent $1300, several years later they add $650 to car's value.

Summary: 2 performance mods that many would want, minus $20. Used seat covers, plus $650. And you want to reason with or argue with these insurance morons? :dunno:

Anything is possible. I was walking out of a gas station 2 days ago and found myself struggling to stay upright as I slid 5-7 feet before stopping. I really didn't even know what was happening at the time. Once I came to a stop I noticed I just stepped in what looked like a puddle of brand new oil (it was very clear). I had to shuffle my feet for 20-30 feet before I regained some form of traction then another 20 or so feet before I had grip.

Point: CPOSK could have hit a fresh puddle of oil from a previous car sitting at the light, highly possible. Once you put freash wet oil on tires, tire type, age, driver skill, experience, etc. have no bearing. With all these leaking oil lines lately it could have been a Viper that had a cooler line blow at the previous light leaving the puddle that CPOSK found......

From the distance CPOSK slid (barring driver error/speed) this seems one of the few likely explanations (radiator hose blew/puddle of antifreeze, etc.).

Listen to Dave - he knows these cars better than 90% of us. He cuts no corners and insists on perfection - I honestly pitty the shop because Dave is one of those guys that actually knows what he's talking about, they will be not be able to cut any corners.

On the used parts vs. new....it's a used car, used parts should be ok unless my logic is off. I didn't say used destroyed or used worn out parts....

Good luck - ALL cars can be fixed, period. It may just involve a fabricator :D

Actually, you'd need to envision 2 really anal guys (me and shop owner) arguing about who is more anal, to get that full picture of me at the shop.

One of the reasons I very quickly stopped dealing with the insurance company and put my effort in to dealing with the body shop was, that the insurance company had their hands tied on things (rules...). Not bad things, but an example here.

-> All parts had to be either brand new or grade A used, same year model or newer.

So, my '01 could either have brand new parts, or used from an '01 or '02 only.

Insurance company: brand new hood, $19,800.00
Dave's choice of VCA sponsoring body shop: let me buy my own hood from Scharf and ship it to body shop for $5,650.00

Rebar: $1800.00 or $300.00
Hood hinges: $1900.00 or $500.00

Both of those insurance prices versus Paul Sharf.

Insurance will be insurance, and you've got what you've got. So put your effort into finding a shop now. They will make this or break it. I was lucky... the VCA has one already in the mix here.

That I can picture & believe :D

I bet it's killing you that you can't simply make modifications "since we're already in here/it's already opened up", etc. You'll have to PM me the shop. I haven't been following your adventure.

I just got off the phone with the viper tech at the dealership I had it towed to. The frame at the upper control arm was pushed completely in. The USAA adjuster had no clue what she was looking at. I had talked to her first, and she was worried about scratches on the headlight, and whether or not the car has power seats. Wonderful.

^^^LMAO didn't I tell ya? A Viper knowledgable service shop will solve that problem mostly. Leaving behind at the end of the repair, that insurance adjusters will still be stupid. But at least your car will be repaired.

Wow, sorry to hear. Does this mean it's done? as in totaled?

I'm glad everyone is ok.

Probably supposed to be low 30's-40's. But it has been warm this year, I was comfortable in a long sleeve polo with the windows down.
