Check engine light ??

I know rear O2 simms trick computer into thinking cats are still there, thereby eliminating a check engine light. Before I put the O2 simms on, not only did the check engine light appear, but the car seemed to backfire quite a bit. Maybe running rich??? Can someone explain this to me and and pitfalls of driving the car in this condition?
