Hey folks.
Just curious if anyone's done heater hose via AN (braided) lines.
More specifically on a GEN. III engine.

I've done it on my ride, but wanted to see if anyone has anything else like it.

It'd be cool if I was the first to figure out how to do the heater hoses. :D

I did sort of "cross-industry" thing and found components that way since the auto/race/aftermarket industry didn't have the necessary components (without the connection being gigantic).

I'll get some pics up very soon, along with a DIY article (on a different forum because I'm not allowed to post in that section here).

QUESTION: Does anyone know the length of the oil cooler lines for the GEN. III/IV cars?

BAT- Thanks for the pics, and the offer to measure.
LOA would probably work, but tubing-only length would be optimal. There I go getting picky...LOL

Looks like the cars and trucks have the same oil cooler (which is also the same one found on the Ford GT! LOL).
The position is similar as well, but the mount brackets are different.

Doing the oil cooler lines was easy.
Doing the heater hose lines was not. :)

Oil cooler lines length
the longer one is 26" total
the shorter one 19" total.
the metal tube only is aprox 4" on all four ends ,like 8" of metal tube per hose.

Thanks BAT!!!
The lines for the truck are 17" and 16" (tubing only).

It's a bummer because I have (4) 'long' and (4) 'short' -10AN lines cut. I bought 10' of -10AN line thinking that I could use that for the heater hoses. I was wrong. :) (-10AN won't fit over the oil cooler and heater core barb fittings).
Since I couldn't return the cut hose, I figured I'd trim the hose into a bunch of oil cooler line lengths, and maybe sell them and get some cash back while helping forum members out.
It's too bad they won't go on the GEN.III Viper cars.

Truck should be finished tonight (after the hockey game....heh heh).
I'm very excited about these new heater hoses.
It REALLY cleans up the engine bay.
More pics ASAP.

Now....fixing the cluster-***k known as the A/C lines.....

A couple of things to consider with steel braided hoses. These types of hoses tend to be quite stiff, therefore whatever your attaching too should be able to withstand the forces these hoses may transmit. An example of this would be a hose attached to a engine and terminating somewhere on the chassis. The movement from the engine will be transmitted directly to the fixed fitting point on the chassis. If that part/fitting is not designed for that amount of stress it will fail. Additionally these types of hoses tend to file there way into surrounding materials. They certainly do look nice, but these elements should be considered.

Camfab- I agree with all you said.

I went with nylon braided lines on my ride for several reasons:
- Reduced weight. The nylon braided lines are about 30% lighter than SS braided. Weight is a bigger issue in the trucks (5200 lbs) than in the cars.
- Heat absorption. SS lines heat up quicker, and retain that heat for longer, than nylon braided lines. As we all know, the Viper engine cranks out some serious heat.
The OEM oil cooler lines were half solid tubing (aluminum) and half rubber hose. I didn't measure line temp before the swap, but I'm guessing my 2-5º drop in oil temp is courtesy of non-metal lines.
- Non-damaging. As CamFab pointed out, SS braided lines can act like a metal file and rub through stuff. Nylon braid is not really abrasive. Nylon is more vulnerable, but.....
- Cost. Nylon braided is much cheaper than SS braided.
- Ease of Assembly. MUCH easier to make your own nylon braided hoses than SS. Less finger-poking. LOL
- I couldn't find anything bigger than -04AN in black SS. :)

On a different vehicle, I would probably demand the SS braided.
For my truck, it's nylon that I believe is going to work best.

BAT- I just noticed that your coolant lines for the oil cooler are attached via worm gears with some heat-shrink protecting the braid.
Any problems with that so far?

I tried the Gates Powergrip Clamps. They failed harder than a 2-legged chair. Charles Manson has a better grip on reality than those things do on the coolant lines.

It seemed like there were very few choices out there:
- Spring clamp (like the OEM hoses have)
- Worm Gear clamp
- Worm Gear clamp with AN-style cover
- T-bar clamp

On a Taurus, the spring or worm-gear clamps are fine.
But I drive a Viper-powered vehicle, damn it! :)
After a brainstorm last night, and a bunch of time using the Google machine on the interwebs, I found something very slick (and I believe lighter weight.)
Testing and pics soon!

Hi ,no probs so far.the heat shrink helps to stop it fraying, and stabbing your fingers.
i have made stainless covers, like a ring but then cut and slld over the hose,do the clamp up then slide the cover back over the clamp.like the clamp covers you can get,
