Popping from the exhaust does indicate raw fuel in the exhaust being ignited. I would lean toward the ignition coil or plug wire. If you still have cats, you should fix this soon as fuel on the cats will destroy them.
There is an alternate method of bleeding. Press the clutch pedal completely down, then slowly open the bleeder valve. Close the valve, then release the pedal. This method causes the pressure plate itself, by pushing on the throw-out bearing/slave cylinder, to force the fluid out the bleeder.
You will need a total of 4 gallons, 2 anti-freeze, 2 distilled water. If a Gen5 is like a Gen3, when you remove the left side block drain, it will drain directly on your starter.
