I am wondering if I have parts that need to be replaced and the vehicle is under warranty can I keep the old parts, or does the dealer have to keep these?

My local dealer told me that DC has gotten worse with the old parts. It used to be that you could keep them...now they want most of them back. (At least in my zone) But hey, who cares? If they were so bad to need replacing anyway..what good are they?

More often than not, they are wanting them back or ask that they be destroyed.

Why? because folks who would get the "If they were so bad to need replacing anyway..what good are they" parts back often turn around and sell them

So DC may get a black eye a second time.

Initially DC may want parts back to determine failure modes and to make product/process improvements. Later, after they have what they need, they may not want the parts back, but request them to be detroyed so they do not go the "sale" route. If you were them, would you do any different?

No. Every repair is tracked by DC. The dealer must keep the part in case DC wants it back. After a certain amount of time the dealer is supplied a "scrap sheet" of parts they can throw away. It usually depends on the repair as to what happends to the parts. I've had them ask for ground off rivets back!! I've also thrown away brown rocker panels!! Go figure??? More often, the part is inspected to determine if any changes are needed.(QC) Over time, these changes turn into production line changes. There is an asigned labor operation number for every repair. DC tracks how often that repair is done. If the repair is a "common" concern that there is a known fix for, it becomes a TSB. So, it's mostly about QC. The dealer can be charged back the amount of the repair if they don't supply the old parts if asked for. dj
