Another crank no start thread but with a twist

Can you tell me what Scanner will work ? I’ll have to purchase one. Assume I will need a cable that mates to the diagnostic connector.

Another crank no start thread but with a twist

Not out of the woods yet, test drive revealed engine behavior that's weird, almost like it was running out of gas, pulls and doesn't pull, thought I wouldn't make it back home. Seems to idle ok but beyond that it was a jerky ride. Back in the garage, it starts and idles and I checked the fuel...

Can anyone recommend a particular brand/part number relay for use in the ASD circuit, preferably with a mounting tab. Reliability is what I’m after, I will change the one thats in there now and keep it in the car for a spare. Has anyone had experience with a solid state relay?

So the story has a happy ending, thanks in no small part to Dan and all of you who chimed in. I ended up installing another ASD relay when Dan questioned my bench testing which showed the relay to be working and voila it fired right up. Was making a lot of metallic noise so I shut it off...

Well, there is no power to the injectors. Checked the fuse and ASD relay, both good. There must be a wiring fault somewhere. More time on my back under the dash.

Is there any potentially useful information to be found on the diagnostic connector? As stated before, the crate motor PCM does not utilize fault codes but I'm assuming the pins of the 16 pin connector, which is easily accessible under the dash, are active and could be probed if there was a any...

well, no joy after replacing both the crank and cam position sensors. Cranks on and on, no hint of combustion. Accelerator pedal pressed a little, or fully, makes no difference. I guess I am now looking at pulling out the PCM.

I’m in North Carolina at moment, back wednesday. I now have the new sensors. I will finish inspecting for damage next week. Depending on what I find will either button it up or perhaps replace the timing set, new oil and filter, new sensors and hope she fires!

Dropped the pan which required the exhaust to be dropped and of course the oil and filter. The filter has been relocated for clearance and its a tight fit to remove. Eventually got it off. So far, found one chunk of magnet stuck to the windage tray, still looking.

Pulled the cam pos sensor and used an endoscope to inspect the area around the mounting hole. No smoking gun but when I dropped the pan years ago to clean out the debris from the destroyed original sensor, I neglected to inspect the mounting area for the missing magnet. So going to bite the...

Another crank no start thread but with a twist

Because the fuel pump is re-triggered at the end of cranking, Dan @ VSP now feels the CKP sensor is probably ok and now suspects the CMP sensor. I ordered a Walker made in USA one of those. I’ll replace both sensors. The thing about the cam sensor failure I had prior, there may be parts of that...

I’m about a week away from receiving my new CPS. I appreciate your offer to loan me your oscilloscope, lets see if the new sensor cures it, then if it still makes sense in terms of appropriate diagnostics at that point, I will take you up on your offer.

I will post pictures of the engine bay. I replaced the cam position sensor maybe two years ago. The water pump had failed and in the course of replacing it I mistakenly removed the CPS. Of course when I subsequently put it back I installed it incorrectly and when I started started the engine, it...

so I checked and have continuity between the ground pins of the CPS, the TPS and ATS (air temp). I also hear the fuel pump run for a moment after I release the start button and it stops cranking.

Ah, crank and cam positions, thanks for clarifying. With regard to will it start with the gas pedal to the floor, I haven’t tried it. At the moment, I have several sensors disconnected in my efforts to trace the 3 wires from the CPS back to the PCM while waiting for the new CPS to come from...
