Can we dispel the "poor handling Viper" myth?

Can we dispel the \"poor handling Viper\" myth? I was at the track Monday for a lapping day with the usual suspects, and noticed something. Several people with different cars - 1 Porsche, 1 Corvette, 2 BMW M3s, said at different times that "you pull away from me on the straight, but I catch...

Driver window slow to go up and down - problem? fix?

I had the same problem, and it turned out to be the switch. Wiggling the switch around would cause the window to work. Replaced the switch and everything is cool. A

    New Dyno Results

Well, dyno'd my 98 GTS for the first time ever today, and the results were: HP - 429.1, Torque - 469.5. This is with ACR headers, Snake Oyl rear sub-assembly, smooth tubes, and K&N filters. Is the correct formula to get crankshaft numbers to divide by .85? If this is the case I'd be at around...

WHY ARE THE NEW CARS NOT SELLING? DEALERS ARE OFFERING HUGH DISCOUNTS LOSING BIG $$

I'd also have to take some exception to this idea of 700 unsold Vipers sitting around. Dodge makes a total of, as I recall, around 2000 per year - and most of them are sold before they're made. It's been my experience that a number of dealerships will get a single Viper in, add a $30,000...

ViperDays Thunderhill Write-up (long, w/ pics)

I have a delivery brochure for my car, and it shows a blue nose badge. The side badging is grey, but I changed mine to blue because I prefer it that way.

ViperDays Thunderhill Write-up (long, w/ pics)

I've just returned from my 3rd Viper Days this year, and following is a short diary of how this event went: Because Thunderhill in Northern California is a mere 700 miles from Seattle, I decided to leave on Friday morning, drive all day, and arrive for the 6:00 PM Check In that evening. The...

    Rear Brake Caliper Tool?

Good idea on the e-brake. Someone showed me the trick of using baling wire to hold the pads in place, but I'll give the e-brake a shot instead. A

    Rear Brake Caliper Tool?

I'm going to be swapping out my rear brake pads tonight in preparation for Viper Days, and I don't have Dodge's special brake caliper tool. Instead, I was advised to just use a C-clamp, which has the twin advantages of being available and cheap. Does anyone have any experience with using this...

    Just got my flat-spots fixed

Basically, they turn the tires on a lathe while still on the wheels. This makes the tires very, very round, but it means that the tire and wheel are round as a set. I got the tires on this afternoon and drove around a bit; there is even less noise and vibration that when the tires were brand new.

Another question for the oil gurus.

So, can I buy the correct gear oil and additives at my local auto parts store? If so, can anyone tell me a recommended brand for each, and how much I should get? Finally, is it tough to replace the gear oil? Is it something I can do in my car-hole with a jack, bucket, and wrench?

    Just got my flat-spots fixed

While driving back from the last Viper Days, I was sure that I'd be out $800 to replace the brand-new front that I managed to flat-spot. However, I took them down to Phelps tire (in the Seattle area) and they managed to save the tires by shaving them. The total cost was $76 including tax for...

    Front Tire Choice

Yes, yes, I know. However, I think that after I get my current fronts shaved then I'm going to get maybe 2 more track days before I need to worry about replacing the fronts, and I'd like to get a cheaper set to burn out before the final Viper Days in September.

    Brake Caliper Refinishing

I definitely have the yellow caliper letters, however, I'm also getting some scoured patches on the fronts due, I'm pretty sure, to lots of swirling brake dust. My concern is getting rust or something else nasty in those un-painted spots. Another option might end up being to buy someone's...

    Button Willow write-up (long, w/ pics) - Part 2

I firmly believe that every Viper owner should do at least 1 day of high-speed driving course IN THEIR VIPERS. Hopefully some first-timers from Button Willow or Willow Springs will chime in here, but I think that the $300 that an instructional day costs is both the cheapest insurance against...

    Button Willow write-up (long, w/ pics) - Part 2

Note: The rest of this topic is show in Part 1 : On Sunday morning, of course, it was raining intermittently but very heavily. Although several other cars were packing it in, I went ahead and did my first run session in the rain and found it to be a valuable learning experience - a wet track...

    Button Willow write-up (long, w/ pics) - Part 1

Due to some size restrictions on posts, I'm doing the write-up in 2 parts. You can see the second part here. So, I just returned late last night from the Button Willow Viper Days event, and figured I'd post a quick write-up of how it went: I started out, again, on a Thursday morning...

    Brake Caliper Refinishing

My front brake calipers are starting to look a bit faded and worn - I was wondering if anyone had any experience with getting them re-finished or re-painted? I know there are 2-stage paint kits, but I'm not looking for something ricey. Basically, I'd like to have the calipers protected from...

    need 5pt harness

Belts are cheap - I can't imagine that the savings from buying a used set would be worth the question mark. I just got a pair of Teamtech 6-points from JonB for around $300 - and they are much, much nicer than the old Simpsons that I had in the car. Get new ones and don't worry about the...

    Front Tire Choice

Does anyone have an opinion or experience on using non-Michelin tires? I've noticed that the Kumho, Nitto, and Yokohama are about 40% cheaper, and that's a bit more palatable for tires that I'm going to abuse the heck out of anyway. I need a tire that I can use for for some street use, but...

    Why upgrade the stock brakes?

I upgraded my brakes to address mostly heat issues under hard braking. I went with the Stoptech slotted rotors and stainless steel lines all around, Motul brake fluid, and the Porsche cooling ducts. For around $100 this gets me some added insurance against brake fade on the track an on...
