I was just thinking about the 2000 GTS I bot new and the paint just felt really funny when I touched it with my fingertip or fingernail(!)
It felt like some kind of extremely hard rubber.
What was interesting about this was, that front end seemed immune to stone chips. I had a 98 Z28 black...
Looks like the "nasty" ingredient is 2-butoxyethanol which is not unlike antifreeze and is also used in some cleaners/degreasers. (What is interesting is that MSDS says it is absorbed through the skin and can cause liver and kidney damage - the interesting part is that this stuff can be found...
I finally got hold of that Sikkens guy and water based paints are now being used via normal retail sales in some areas of CA. ALL Sikkens water based product is available anywhere in the US via your local Sikkens dealer.
Sooooooooo.... Has anyone tried this stuff yet???
I just don't want to...
I authored a long hood thread where I used every adjustment to make an asymmetrically warped carbon fiber hood fit with about 1/2" gap outboard of the headlights.
I couldn't reduce it because the "headlights were too small." (actually hood lost its curvature at the headlight cut out.)
What I...
I guess that's why the Sikkens CA rep has no interest in talking to me.
While I haven't been watching threads diligently for this topic, I don't seem to find any discussion on this topic. One would think that the 8 years of European use would find complaints trickling into this web site.
It...
No, I've seen autoaircolors before, they have been around for a few years at least.
They have water based paints but only in a limited number of standard colors - no chance of matching any manufacturer's paint.
I read one thing about the Sikkens product and that it produces a much "cleaner"...
I'm waiting.... waiting... waiting.... because I want to use the stuff on my Viper.
Have heard that Sikkens has been using the stuff in Europe for 8 years and in Canada it will be required legally in 18 months.
The Sikkens water based project in California - the representative in charge WILL...
...my 2 cents (oh what did they do with the "cent" key)...
The T86 is really a 4-spd with double over drive added as an afterthought.
A properly designed 6-speed "race" transmission uses diminishing spreads as you shift upwards (There are road race muncie 4 speeds that have 3rd gear rations...
I had a set of custom, hand-made, copper/asbestos sandwich gaskets made from Molina Gasket in CA for a V8 and they cost $200.
The quality of the workmanship was outstanding.
Of course, my application was iron/iron.
They could also do composition with crush rings around the cylinders.
Just a...
Oh my what a ride!
I have drive a 600 rwhp gen 1 RT and rode in a 600 rwhp/3200lb Nissan pickup w/TT350 and I just can't imagine what 1500 is like.
I did like the discussion of what HP each gear can hold. I think that info is extremely important because it is just so much fun to "horsepower...
I started another thread stating the waterbase stuff is NOT iso-cyanate.
So I guess I would suggest any further postings on this be put on that thread.
But to address the last post by Jerome:
I don'tknow if anyone in the USA can shed light on this - because Sikkens North American corporate...
GTSnake,
Great question.
Iso cyanates are extremely toxic components of the hardener used for urethane paints. They were first used with catalyst was made available for acrylic enamels.
Its not so much that they are toxic but rather the way they poison you.
If it was merely through...
Yippee
Now we just need to get the primers and basecoats over here that they are already using in Europe.
The stuff is odorless too.
Great news for all the renegade body shops out there...
Tom
PS. There is already a water based Autowave Filler which is not recommended for large area...
I was just talking with Sikkens.net which is the North America Sikkens business unit and this stuff is strictly EUROPEAN (Sikkens.com)
Hello European Viper Owners (!) Do you know any particulars about the new water based automotive paints that I think are being mandated there way ahead of our...
Upgrading to a B&B 10.4 to a GM diaphragm ended my street racing days in my early 20's.
Clutch locked, no snapped shut and started a procession of breakage that I never recovered from.
I ended up restoring the car which was even a worse move since that turned it into a graven image of...
I would say a nice test is to verify that the car will fry the tires when you throttle into 2nd and maybe even 3rd - 3rd should be breaking loose if the road has any undulations.
At Sea Level of course. At 5000-6000 ft, don't even think about 2nd.
Re: 80k 96 GTS Driver\'s Window Regulator Blew
Treed,
Your pinched wiring is interesting since I was trying to raise the window with the door open!
Hate to hear more of the "small little replaceable part broke but I had to replace the entire assembly."
Reminds me when I broke my gas pedal...
80k 96 GTS Driver\'s Window Regulator Blew
The window was pretty slow going up, then a pop and now I have a roadster.
Looks like I will have to get into the doorand repair the regulator.
Is this a common failure/repair?

Could be my computer, but I think it is related to the new site...
"Problem" "Solved" (!)
Showed paint shop the photos and said there was NO WAY it could be anything other than a bad gun, so I returned the gun and they gave me an IWATA primer gun.
Now we enter the Twilight Zone:
1) TRY OUT THE NEW GUN.
I get the gun home, get ready to paint, hook it up...
