Why do we have such bad brakes?

I'd be interested to see a graph of stopping distances for repeated stops (10 or so) from 125 mph to 40 mph, both time and distance. I'd also like to see a measurement of the Caliper or rotor temperatures at the end of the runs. I'd use street tires of the same make, and standardize pad...

VETTE OWNER, FUTURE VIPER OWNER NEEDS YOUR HELP!!!!

I have some comments to make regarding which model year is the 'best'. This question is frequently discussed on this board, and my observations are that people generally think that the year of car they own is the superior year. There is lots of talk about which years had the most horsepower...

VETTE OWNER, FUTURE VIPER OWNER NEEDS YOUR HELP!!!!

Hi JBS, I don't think most Vipers are always in the shop. That sounds more like anti-Viper rhetoric from a crowd that's partial to Vettes. My wife and I bought a new 99 GTS and have put 8000 miles on it, and the only problem has been a slow driver's power window. I do not expect the Viper...

    What does your Viper Weigh???

My Viper weighed in at 3450 without me in the car and with a bit over a half a tank of gas. This measurement was at a truck stop scales. My brother's 3000 GTVR4 weighed 3850 and our Z06 weighed 3150 all on the same scales w/o driver and about a half a tank. Jim

    Corsa or Borla?

I am one of those guys who doesn't fancy real loud exhausts. I don't see the facination with an exhaust note that rattles windows and makes people cringe from blocks away. If you are like me, the 2.5 inch Corsa system is a great upgrade. I have had the 2.5 inch Corsa and the 3 inch Corsa...

    Just installed Corsa 3" exhaust.

Re: Just installed Corsa 3\" exhaust. I think the sound at start up is a little 'rattley' sounding, like someone is shaking a can of marbles under the car, but as soon as the car warms up for even a couple of minutes, that sound goes away and I think it has a great healthy rumble. I went...

Re: A weird resin smell....any idea\'s Don't all Viper smell like resin? Mine does. I think it's normal. Jim

    Top Speed in Viper?

Just last week on a nice deserted stretch of highway, I ran our 99 GTS to just over 160 mph. The car was still accelerating quite well and did feel stable, but it was incredibly loud. There was tire noise, engine noise, and exhaust noise. I was around 4800 rpm, and believe the car could pull...

For all of us who WILL be driving through the winter....

I live in the Northwest and pretty much drive my Viper year round, except when it snows. We have a lot of rain, but it doesn't get too cold, so I use the standard oil weight all year. It's probably colder in IL. I'd check the owners manual to see if it recommends a thinner oil for winter. I...

    Portland Int'l Raceway Invite FRIDAY!

Re: Portland Int\'l Raceway Invite FRIDAY! The Alfa club is having their Fall track day PIR on October 28th. They usually require a membership in the BMW, Porsche, or Alfa clubs to drive, but the prices are quite reasonable. Membership in the Alfa club is something like $40 a year and the...

    Potential buyer...differences in '98-99 GTS?

Re: Potential buyer...differences in \'98-99 GTS? I have found that people with 98's prefer the 98's and people with the 99's prefer the 99's. If I was looking for a used car, I'd let condition, price and location be the deciding factors. I don't think there is that much difference in the...

Are we headed to the Vette site in a couple of years?

I think it is quite natural for owners of a current model not too like the new improved model. I see this happen all the time. Owners of air cooled Porsche 911's don't like the 996 and I've heard E36 M3 owners bad mouth the new E46. Viper owners complain about the new Viper. I think some...

    Test Drive Joke?

Once my local Dodge dealer knew I was serious about buying my 99 GTS they insisted that I take it for a test drive. It was a brand new car with 15 miles on it so they were not exactly tossing the keys to anyone who came through the door and wanted to take a Viper for a joy ride. I think you...

    68 miles/ 10 gallons = ouch.......

I owned a 93 RX-7tt and it was fun to drive, but a huge lemon. I worked on it more then I drove it. I liked the small and nimble feel of the Mazda, but other then that, our 99 GTS simply blows the Mazda away. I know you can mod an Rx-7 to be very fast, but in stock form the cars are not in...

    Brakes upgrade question

Gavin, have you said which vendor's four wheel system you installed, and did you try a front only upgrade first? I am wondering if you experienced an excessive lock up problem with a front only upgrade, and then decided on the four wheel system, or if you went directly from stock to a four...

Results of the Brake upgrade quest.

I don't think you can go wring with that decision. You can go plenty fast in a Viper with only a pad upgrade. I guess some of us are interested in increasing braking performance like others are interested in increasing power. Does the car 'need' it? Not really, but it's fun to tinker and...

    Viper as a road car

That sounds like a great trip, all right. I have also found the Viper to be quite comfortable on long road trips. The only thing I want is cruise control. 25 mpg is great. I think the best I have seen is 22 mpg. I hope to go on a few long trips myself in the next year or so. Jim

2001 GTS compared to 2000 LPE TT C5 (my non-expert opinion)

Heel and toe is easier for me in our Viper then in our Z06. Jim

Who here has owned a Corvette Prior to a Viper?

My wife and I bought a new 99 GTS, and also bought an 01 Z06 about 4 months ago. Both cars are great. Whichever one I'm driving at the time is the one I like 'best'. Jim

    Brakes upgrade question

I don't know the brake proportioning on the Z28. It has PBR single piston calipers in the rear. I suppose they could be better then the stock rear Viper calipers and contribute more to the overall braking. The Z28 had single piston cast iron calipers in the front, which were horrid. I did...

    Brakes upgrade question

I believe that a 'properly balanced' four wheel brake system will provide better stopping power and fade resistance then a front only upgrade. However, I also believe that a 'properly balanced' front only system will provide better stopping power and fade resistance then the stock system (I put...

    Brakes upgrade question

Hi Gavin, if your point is that good driving is more important then big brakes, I agree completely. However, there are a lot of drivers like me who prefer the peace of mind associated with brakes that fade less, stop better, and are easier to modulate then the wimpy stock brakes. I am sure...

    Brakes upgrade question

My experience with brake upgrades is that cross drilled and/or slotted rotors don't do anything for reducing stopping distance or reducing fade. I have tested several different pads on my Alcon equipped Z28 along with plain and slotted rotors. The pads made a big difference, but I could...

Has anyone replaced their pedal set?

I don't know about the Sparcos, but I bolted on a Razzo brake pedal that makes heel and toe a lot easier for me. It's one of those cheezy 'carbon fibre' pedal covers with the bolt on clamps. You can get them at most auto parts stores. Jim

    Corsa

Hi mayasa. I think that was my 2.5 inch system that I swapped out for a 3 inch. I might actually like the sound of the 2.5 a little bit better. I'm not a loud exhaust kind of guy and I really liked the tenor kind of wail the 2.5 inch produced a WOT. Sorry about the missing clamp and bolt...
