What a timley topic as I am cleaning my engine tomorrow. Ive had okay results with a solution of Dawn and water, but wanted to try Gunks Foamy Engine Brite. The label says its safe for most underhood plastic and rubber, and safe for most painted engines. Ill test it out tomorrow and post results.
Just got an Escort X50, havent had the chance to try it out yet as the car is being worked on. In the Speedlabs test it provided better warning against POP. Im sure the V1 is great too, just didnt care for its looks.

Hey NatRT, just a thought, if you're so worried about potential problems when upgrading your car, whats keeping you from selling it and getting a Gen II? I know you just got it, but if youre having second thoughts about your purchase, Im sure you could sell it and not take too much of a hit...

The B&M with the MGW knob is a great combo, but I havent tried any of the others. Rocket is right, any aftermarket shifter will be a big improvment.
Im also pretty sure that the sidesills and insulation are one part. Inconel makes a much superior side sill insulation. Keep that nice new paint from yellowing and scorching. $618 per side from DC Performance...
