Check tire dates, brakes, brake fluid. Expect to change plugs and wires(not easy on a Gen 3). But also look at the Gen 4s too. Really a much better/faster car and more reliable. Gen 3s have had #3 and #8 bearing issues. Selling this 2010:

Just do all the checks. Carfax, Autocheck............ Then go to the dealer and have them run the VIN thru their system, print it out and keep it for your records.
I am betting that your sensor might be bad. It should take a good 10 min before it really starts to get hot even if there was no flow. Sensor is the cheapest thing to replace.
