Great post Jay..thanks! Where can I find total GTS by color production figures? I know that many years are on the VIN page on the VCA site, but '99 is missing. I would like to know how mamy of each color GTS were built.

Not to worry Hawaii, the numbers are not built in sequence and they don't always fall within the range. As a prime example: My 2000 GTS was built last October (10/99) with a VIN of 602611 - a full eighty numbers BEFORE the first retail 2000 (602691). I would still bet dollars to doughnuts that I was one of the first 2000 deliveries (11/18), but it makes no difference. Interesting numbers indeed!

Wow, I'm really surprised at how high production was for '00! Significantly higher than '98 or '99 I believe...

I can't speak for '98, but figure that 1999 was a short production year. Instead of starting the build in January as I understand has happened in previous Viper years, 2000 production started in October. That would mean that there were less than ten full months of '99 production, assuming it started in January and wrapped up the first week of October.

I would also say that there were three big factors in 2000 orders increasing:

1. Steel gray was a VERY popular color, even outbuilding Viper red. As a "one off" color (one year only), it spawned a lot of orders. Black was also rumored to be ending in 2000 (which it did), after a short run in 1999. Also popular.

2. Despite the cast pistons, rumors abounded that the 2000's had stronger engines. This seemed to be backed up by the tuners when they dyno'ed them. Several existing Viper owners "updated" their cars to the 2000's.

3. Dot com riches. You will find many new owners either directly involved in high tech or at least well invested in it. What better car to buy than a Viper?

All that said, I will bet that the 2001 sales will blow 2000 away. Why? Well, there is the new color (sapphire blue) and a new variation on an old one (yellow). Most importantly, there is a HUGE performance upgrade: ABS. While you can debate the merits of it on the track, the media has made sure that everyone knows the biggest current Viper weakness is braking (and they are right). They blame this solely on lack of ABS (debatable). Watch the 2001's roll off in droves.

That's my 2¢, and you overpaid at that!

Those really are pretty big production numbers compared to many prior years. Back in 1998 there were quite a bit fewer, especially the color scheme at left, one of 21 ;-)

This avatar thing is cool!

I FINALLY got the '99 numbers in the VIN area a week after VOI.... Only thing missing is the production numbers of each color (have that for ACR's only). This year the folks that so generously pass us the info were able to get EVERYTHING to us as, much thanks to them!

As to the higher production numbers, Chris hit most of the reasons.... another subtle one was the addition of an extra month of production at the end of the model year to fill the sold orders for 2000! People just plain bought more Vipers!!!!

First 2001 goes down the line this week

Jay,
Thanks alot for this post, as it is really appreciated by all. We sold an awful lot of striped cars in 2000, and this verifies that, overall, very few of any color were actually produced. Your efforts are always above and beyond!!!
