Differences in Gen 2 at the track vs gen 4?

I had significant seat time in my 2000GTS at Willowsprings. Although primarily stock I had set up the car with adjustable shocks and it had headers. The rest of the mods I maintained were for safety or added reliabity.

One difference that comes to mind is that the car is so much faster and smoother I may overdrive it going into the corners. I've noted a lightness in the rear just at the car "settles" into the corner on the street.

Assuming I will track the bone stock '09 at some point what sort of nuances should I expect?

Thanks,
Carl

Carl have you taken David's car out on the track yet? I can tell you going from my 2000 to and '08 ACR was night and day. The Gen 4 gave me more confidence and consistantly faster laps. Considering my 2000 was set up similar to yours minus the shocks I think you'll be very happy, especially if you can get your hands on an ACR (I know of a good one for $76K).

The brakes are unreal and you have to get used to the VVT. My biggest problem was trying to get on the gas too early on the PSCs, If not heated right coming out of turn #9 into the straight you hit the rpm "sweet spot" and when I gas too early I spin the tires, makes for a nice 1080 :D

I have not driven David's but I'll be with him in a couple of weeks at a new track. I am hoping to get to Willow this fall.

Where you coming off of 9 in 3rd gear or 4th?

Yes...I heard that Roc's selling his (originally my) ACR. I talked to him before I bought the '09 in April. He just wasn't ready then....dang. Mine was an impulse buy....call me Forest....

I'll also have to get used to gooing back to PS rather than Toyo's...that will probably be as much a thrill.

Thanks

Carl,

Going from my 2000 GTS to the 04 SRT was scary. Like you said, the car is so much faster that you are coming up to corners at a higher rate of speed is takes some getting used to, also, the cars are stiffer, the Gen III's like to skip on corners that weren't smooth, I never felt real comfortable in the 04. Now with the 08, its a different story. The power band is different, you have more power at higher RPM's, this gives me more comfort when you need to modulate the throttle, and you have more control lets say in sweeping turns, the car just wants to jump when your over 4000 rpm. I would think turn 8 would be cool in an 08/09. Like Ron says because of this power band you might hit the power too soon coming out or corners. Overall, I feel very comfortable in the 08 over the 04.

Let me know when your going to Willow Springs, I'll try and make it.

With the stock 3.07s I'm coming off of 9 in 3rd gear, fairly high in the rpm range but with the better power band in the Gen 4 it works great. With the 2000 and my 3.55 gears I was coming out of 9 in 4th and hadda throw 5th in the front straight. You don't need 5th in the gen 4 touching around 150 at the end of the front straight.

Interesting....I typically came out of 9 in 4th and only shifted to 3rd when held up by someone. I found if I stayed in 4th at the speed I was going it allowed me to keep both hands on the wheel as I pushed out to the pit exit or one had on the wheel and the other covering my eyes.

With the data acquistion system I had I found it was faster to stay in 4th in 9 and stay in 3rd in 3 at least it was for me. I wish I could hit willow with the new car before going to Coronado but time and money dictate other.

Brad...I'm really going to try and make OTR in November. I'll keep you posted.

Carl in your GTS with shocks/springs and Toyo's you probably were quicker in areas like 2 and 3-5. You'll see that you enter 8 and 1 much quicker and you'll be amazed how late you can brake into 1, Gen IV has ton's of power and great brakes, add shocks/springs, tires and a good driver run 1:30.

So, you sayng I'm going to be slower than my GTS then. :D

j/K. I think I ran a best of 1.31.4 in the GTS. I need to double check.

edit...the older I get the better I was....checked the data.....31.64....

That's a smokin time in your GTS! Are you going to go to Pahrump on October? Great deal at $60 per day! If so see you there Mike

yes...it was on slicks though also on a very hot day with a passanger. I think it would have been sub 1;30 on a cold day and those tires by myself. They were sticky and only lasted two sessions, though I ran them 3. I posted pics along time ago how they looked. Slocal and Marc were there that day.

Pahrump's on the list. My schedule dictates I wait to see if I have to travel though....

Carl,

Nice to see you back.

Hope you can make Spring Mountain with the club.

Big difference in the two cars. The GTS ACR always felt like a big go cart that I could throw around while the SRT was so capable and stuck so well, it was a bit scary at times. The SRT ACR is even more capable and has taken some time to get accustomed too, and I'm not nearly there yet.

First changes I'd make if tracking a Gen IV would be a good alignment, then tires, then Motons. This car feels better when it's been lowered a bit. You will melt the OE PS2s if you're not careful.

Gearing will be a bunch different at first as the OE tires are over an inch taller and the Gen IV doesn't have the same "torquey" feel that the GTS has.

I ran in 4th out of turn 9 too in the GTS. In the Gen IV, you can run out of 3rd, then shift into 4. Just be careful at first with street tires or you may spin at speed using WOT while coming out of turn 9.

Speeds in a straight line are quite a bit higher but the brakes are better.

Hope to see you soon.

A little OT, but Dan, you mentioned Motons, so you have them installed already? What's your impression? I just threw the 800# springs on the back of my ACR and they took a little of the bounciness out of the car, but didn't tame the car completely. Will be doing an autox tomorrow and will see how they perform.

Bruce,

I would expect the softer springs will help the suspension & tires give better mechanical grip on the auto-x course. The spring rates on the ACR were set for high speeds and high aero loading to keep from squashing them onto the packers. You'll probably gain a lot from working on the bump and rebound settings, but may find the shocks are over-damped for the lighter springs.

Hey Bruce,

Yes, I installed the Moton Motorsport shocks on my ACR along with 7-inch 800 lb front / 1100 lb rear Eibachs, corner weighted the car, checked the alignment and am waiting for cooler weather!

The Motons are sooooo much better that there's no comparison. It's like they start damping immediately and get progressively stiffer, controlling the ride all along while the OE shocks wait a while, then start to work very aggressively, resulting in a very bouncy, uncontrolled ride. You would love the Motons!

You should consider coming out to Spring Mountain with us Oct 3 & 4. You'd like that track.

Dan :drive:
