I assumed that I had flat spotted my front tires during a recent track event as the car developed a shimmy ~ 90 mph. I ordered new tires from Tire Rack and Luke recommended a local repair shop that recently installed a new Hunter Balancer.

Long story short - my old tires were saved - the balancer also measures roadforce and shows the high and low spots on the wheel and tire. The tire beads are then broken loose, the tire rotated to a pre-determined position on the wheel, re-inflated and dynamically balanced. Absolutely outstanding results. My tires have 15,000 miles and feel like brand new.

Hunter has a web site that shows the shops that have this equipment. If you live in the Philadelphia area, Barry Luff's ((215) 794-5283) Auto Service did the work for me. Great guy, great service and zero wheel damage.

I've also learned that over time it may be possible to rotate the tire on the wheel if a vehicle is driven aggressively. Of course if this happens, the original balance goes out the window.
