Does the year matter?

I have a '97 with the luggable key fobs. I dropped a set of keys and the fob's plastic case cracked. I want to replace it with one of them new fangled pocket sized fobs. Anyone know if they will work with my 97 coupe? Anyone tried?

A newer style fob (98, I think) worked in my '97. (Can't use those ZAF carbon fiber covers anymore, though http://www.viperclub.org/zaf/logo_acc.html )

When the '97 style fob breakes the new style ('98 or '99) is the replacement, sometimes the dealer covers it under warranty.

I have 4 fobs (2 original and 2 newer and they all work on the car. To get all 4 to work you have to program all 4 in the same session.

I have george's covers for my old style fobs. look cool but decreases the range quite a bit.
