They are aluminum, so if you don't get it fixed, it's highly likely they will oxidize. It's not a job for the do-it-yourselfer unless you have lots of experience. You can start out with 1500 grit to form it, then 2000 grit to smooth it out. A really fine grit polish will bring out the mirror finish. The hard part is getting the clear coat back on. Rather than painting it on, it has to flow back on. This works great for small spots, but not for large patches that have to be fixed. For large spots, I suspect an airbrush would be the tool of choice.
