It's now been one week since I bought my 2000 GTS. You'll have to search my username if you want to see pics.

A little background on me. I started shopping Vipers probably about 1-1/2 to 2 years ago. I eventually talked myself out of buying and decided to order an E55. As the time drew near to make final choices for options on the E55 I found that I kept doing searches for used GTS's and glancing at this forum from time to time. Then a couple of weeks ago I noticed two for sale in my area. One was black and the other was the one I bought. After a week of getting inspections, transferring funds and all the other stuff I needed to do, I picked up the car on my lunch hour on July 25th and drove it back to work.

I have to admit that although I have driven high horsepower cars on the street, I was a bit intimidated by the "new to me" Viper. My current car, a blown '93 Trans Am (which is for sale if anyone needs a racecar) is faster than the Viper. It's also more explosive when going WOT in the 2-3000 RPM range. But the Viper seems to lay down the power pretty well. Now that I've pulled it to redline a few times I can feel that the torque curve is a bit wider. In addition, the return to drivability is a real blessing. Oh, and airconditioning and power at the same time.....I'd forgotten what that was like even if I don't use the air much ;)

My other concerns that I had about Vipers were the following.

Interior heat....hasn't been an issue in my car. The side sill has only gotten warm to the touch and then only if I've done some "spirited" driving. Maybe I was spoiled by the TA, which has neither air nor vents and requires one to drive with the windows down all the time?

Visibility....Far better than I expected, and even better once I learned that the pedals adjust....DOH!

Buyer's remorse.....ROTFLMAO!

Giving up the luxury items.....I will need to improve the radio...maybe. I might not want to have it compete with that fine exhaust sound.

Gas mileage: First tank was 11.5 MPG. That's as good as my Grand Cherokee daily driver....oh, my ex daily driver for the moment

Gawk factor. My kid & wife see more people looking at us than I've notice alone. I've been to busy looking out the front view to care about the other people. The guys in the neighborhood stop by if they see me out. Everyone wants to get a ride.

Some of my concerns.

I've only had a couple of chances making turns at elevated speeds. There is a point of absolute ease to make turns that my other cars would be a handful. Not that they couldn't go that fast, but in the Viper it fells like a normal speed. I still have not gotten near the limit of adhesion and am intimidated to approach there. I've got to get some track time in September to really get a feel for what the Viper does at the edge.

Parking.....the exercise does me good

Tailgaters......these idiots have no idea how fast I can stop.....BACK OFF!

Street racing....must fight the temptation....God give me strength. To the guy in the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution with paper plates. Enjoy your Rally car but know, even a Subaru will kick your butt!

Seat comfort.....My seat bottom seems to lean forward. I suspect the previous owner put in the seat lowering kit. The front edge looks lower than on the passenger side. I think under heaving braking I may submarine. This should be an easy adjustment if I take the time to get out of the car instead of driving it.

Mileage....I'm afraid I'm going to be one of those Viper owners that rack up the miles.

VCA...Should I actually join?

And my biggest concern.....When do I get to drive it again?

There are so many others things to describe my feeling in the Viper. I know you other owners understand. For the rest of you trying to decide....well you'll have to wonder if it fits you. For me, all my friends agree that between the following two comments, the latter really fits me.

Hi, I'm a Mercedes owner.

Hi, I own a Viper.

I hope I can make it but with a wife that's due on the 10th....well you can understand.

I saw the Willow springs thing in Sept. That may be a better option for the near term.

Join the VCA!! I just went to their great inexpensive event in Long Beach. I got instruction and seat time, and a discount on my helmet purchase from a supplier.

Hi flow cats will help the sill heat problem
You might look into the seat lowering mod
Joining the VCA gets you the quarterly "VIPER" magazine, and discounts at some supporting vendors.
Have fun!

Giving up the luxury items.
Purists don't care about luxury items. I wish Dodge would've just routed the stereo wires and left jacks for buyers to put their own systems in. It would've re-enforced the "built for one purpose" message and Dodge would've saved a couple bucks.

I still have not gotten near the limit of adhesion and am intimidated to approach there.
The track. The only place to really appreciate a sports car.

I've got to get some track time in September to really get a feel for what the Viper does at the edge.
That's what I like to hear. Too bad the poser list always seems to outnumber the trackers - more so for other cars, but still...

Good luck Carl, get some track pics/video and let us know what you think.

Mileage....I'm afraid I'm going to be one of those Viper owners that rack up the miles.
Be proud, not afraid. I'm joining the 70K miles list in another day.

Try ButtonWillow before you venture out to Willow Springs.

Oh yeah...Dave Turner puts together an event often out there doesn't he? That's a good suggestion. Have you gone out there?

Carl, good write up! I am in the same position as you are having just purchased my first Viper. Theses cars don't leave you very neutral do they? There are some refinements that I miss but hey, there is always someting, at least in all the cars I have owned so far. I know what you mean about the mileage. Even though I don't ever put on more than 3 to 4k usually, I've logged 470 miles in just two weeks and am always looking for a reason to go for a spin. I am still not too comfortable parking and leaving the car unless I can keep an eye on it as it seems like they draw mondo attention and until I get comfortable with that, I will park it close by. I have hi flo cats and heat does not seem to be a problem. My first mod is going to be some kind of brake upgrade. Sean Roe seems to have some pretty reasonable upgrades that won't kill the budget either. Enjoy your car and congrats on the addition about to happen, John

Carl, congrats on your new car. www.speedventures.net is having a track weekend at Buttonwillow on August 23rd & 24th, they are a great club and relativly inexpensive. There will be about a dozen Viper drivers there including myself and 2 Comp Coupes. We are the "fast crowd" and I'd be happy to instruct you. Please join us if you have any questions email me at [email protected] I hope you can make it.

I would take Ron up on that offer! Maybe he'll have some soup too! LOL (sorry, old inside joke)

Haha, how ya doin' Ulyssess?

Invitation extends to you too if you wanna learn how to drive your car, I could arrange for you to take a fast ride in a Comp Coupe also.

Hi Ron,

You mean taking my car off track and planting it into a hillside is NOT driving my car!?!

LOL! Yes, not this time, but I will definitely take you up on that offer in the future.

Ron's deal sounds pretty good. Timing's going to be the issue for me though. The soonest I may be able to do anything is September. Having "gotten into" the throttle this weekend, I'm feeling intimidated by the comments "that's a fast track". Think I'd better ease into this some. Still looking forward to getting some track time. Holtville was the place I was thinking of with Turner motorsports.

Have you been to Holtville? From what I hear, it's an old runway that hasn't been kept up very well. Lot's of pebbles and stuff that don't get swept up. A friend of mine that road races often says he'll never go back there due to all the rocks being kicked up.

Nope, haven't been. I know a few that have. I'll have to check with them to see what they think. Otherwise Buttonwillow may be it.
