Hmm... I learned on my current car how to shift, I'm not the best in the world, and it's an aquired skill. I don't think you can shift w/o letting off the clutch, but chirping the wheels and burning rubber isn't too difficult. Basically, if you shift at a high RPM to a higher gear, you'll chirp.

I guess all I can say keep clutch to a minimum and the revs right below the redline.

Still haven't figured out how to launch w/o bogging yet, but I heard it has a lot to do with my car and not as much with my skill.

2tall, if you are at a standstill, rev the engine to 3000 rpm and drop the clutch and your car bogs down...it has a problem. It depends on your tires but with the stock tires you should be able to launch at around 2300 rpm or so and still have a little tire spin. With softer/stickier tires you have to up the revs a little. The key to a good launch, for me anyway, is not to pin it after the launch. It is tempting to drop the clutch at 2500 and then as soon as the clutch is out, go WOT. That does nothing but spin the tires. If you want the quickest 60 ft times you need to wait with you foot at the same throttle position that gave you the 2300-3000 rpm until the tires just about stop spinning and then punch it. You'll get the traction then and take off. You could technically have a faster launch with a slow clutch release but it makes my skin crawl to ride the clutch under such heavy acceleration so I go with the pop the clutch approach.

Want to get the most out of your viper for straight line acceleration? Get my video, "How to Drag Race Your Viper", finally.....as of tonight.....available on the VHS version. DVD Version will be available in about 30 days.

This video is a one of a kind item. WARNING: It may get boring at times for the experienced racer, and has no tear jerking scenes! Lots of Drag racing action though, with analysis of the time slips and altitude correction factors. This video will show you(from my point of view) how to get the most out of your viper at the drags.....and on the street.

They are on High Quality BASF VHS and the cost is $ 39.95 for the VHS version.

Feel free to contact me via email or phone to order.

Thanks and good luck,

Tom

I too am just learning how to handle this beast. I never had a car that you could "almost" powershift to second (Facing straight ahead) that would put you in a tailspin. So the suggestion is: launch at 2,300 rpm's letting the clutch out slowly? What about 2nd? Like I said, if I'm agressive, I'll spin out. Do I need to ride the clutch a little?

I'm sure you'll hear from the gurus on this one,but i'll give it a shot.Yes u can powershift at wot.Keep your foot planted on the gas and before u shift,U must start pulling on the shifter HARD,real hard, and u must know where the next gear is,Exactly.Your clutch foot becomes a shotgun, and you stab the clutch and release in moments time.BBBBUUUUT,you'll probably spend more time at the dealer than enjoying your car.It takes lots of practice(can be done on a honda civic or such)to get this feel.I have never done on my 99R/T.If U miss a gear,!%#$%%,nothing pleasant can happen.Try just pulling ******* the shifter, before shifts, you'll see how hard the car reacts. This works well with 2-3,Pushing up hard before clutch release, have never missed it.Coming out of the hole, keep one thing in mind, less tire spin , better 1/4 et.I come out at 2000+- and ease into it like a gramma driver.Good Luck!
