Hi guys,
I bought a 96 RT/10 last fall and have been fixing small things on it and decided to really dive in this week to replace the throw out bearing, even though a new clutch and throw out bearing were installed shortly before I bought it. I brought it to a mechanic near my house to diagnose ac leak and do a general inspection in addition to them giving me thoughts on the rattling noise while in neutral. They said it’s the throw out bearing because it stops making the noise when you depress the clutch in neutral and the clutch is operating fine.
I had read a few articles about the viper neutral rattle but they said it should go away if you increase the idle. When I increase the rpm’s the rattle speed just increases until the engine drowns it out ao I thought the mechanic may have been right about the throw out bearing.
You can probably guess where this is going but I drained the tranny, took it out, thought everything looked normal but put the new throw out in anyway, just bolted it all back together today and it sounds exactly the same.
I uploaded a video of it here: https://youtube.com/shorts/CtHqOdpKXxM?si=7K9lEQvaxr8uH96M
Any thoughts/help would be greatly appreciated!
At least it wasn’t a total waste of time. In the process I noticed two f the 8 transmission bolts were missing… not reassuring for the guy that installed the new clutch and throw out bearing before me. Also notice my transmission mount was torn in half, so replaced that with an energy suspension unit before putting it back together.
