While I missed it first hand, I am told that this NSX had a pretty serious mishap on the track at Heartland Park in Topeka. The Great Plains Porsche Club has it's spring driver's school going on this weekend. The NSX had been driving hard and playing with Kory's Viper GT2. I was told he (the NSX) spun it once and recovered. The next lap he spun it in the same place and didn't do so well. He hit the wall and then caught fire. They parked the car up in paddock area by the time I got to the track:

He hit hard enough to blow out both airbags. It also bent the axles/wheels. The rear window blew out from the engine fire:

Kory arrived with his fire extinguisher but the track crew was already on it. They used the sodium bicarbonate which left a nasty film on the car:

I am told they took the driver to the hospital for observation, but that he walked away from this wreck. It is always a shame to see such a beautiful car go down like that. There was also a Mustang Cobra that nailed the tire wall. I have pictures of that car as well if anybody is interested.

On a lighter note, our Vipers looked GREAT out there! While Kory left before I arrived, I did manage to get some decent photos of a few Kansas City club members. Here is Mason with his beautiful red GTS with gold stripes:

Gary jumped out there with his RT/10. He got a GREAT intructor and had a ball:

And finally there was our boy Randy. One of the nuttiest guys out there, it is always a hoot to watch him drive. He is VERY good and only seems to get beaten by Pemberton (who is in Ohio this weekend). This is Randy at about 80 mph:

Oh, and don't let the Generation 1 wheels fool you: Randy runs his track tires on older style rims. Pretty interesting combination!

It was a fun day at the track and a blast to watch. Hope you liked the pictures!

I have done a couple of those lap session/driving schools. Are there insurance policies that would cover this? If you are worried about it you probably should not be out there. That's why I quit while I was ahead after a couple of them.

OK, OK! One Mustang Cobra, complete with adjustable wing:

Not a pretty picture, but not as bad as the NSX...
