Vec 3 on a Gen 1?

Anyone running one?

I still assume the SCT won't work on a Gen 1 since it is not OBD2...so it would seem my only option is a Vec3 at this time?

I am just wanting to tune the car a bit to insure that it runs better and more effeciently. The car has 81k on the clock and I am toying with the idea of supercharging next year...

VEC 3 will be a waste. You might get an extra 5 hp if you are lucky with it. I had ART put one on my 96 and it did nothing.

I installed a VEC3 in my 95 over the winter to tune my DIY TT system. Not sure what gains you will get on a stock motor, but if you plan on adding a supercharger, it's not a bad idea to get the tuning part sorted out before adding the supercharger.

Well, thinking of adding a 708 cam along with roller rockers and rods (which I need advice on that as well)...so a tune might not be a bad idea.

if youre doing a cam, call greg good and talk to him about cams. there are much better options than a 708

Yes. I've had the VEC3 for a while now. I'd suggest talking about where you're headed before you pick a CAM. Greg Good is one of the first places I'd go for info. If I'm not mistaken, the heads have to come off to replace the CAM. That makes a CAM swap expensive. You'll want to pick the right one for where you are headed. Perhaps not, but I don't know how you would hold the lifters in place with the heads on.

I'm no expert, but I believe that you would need to craft some sort of setup with magnets that reach down into the pushrod holes through the heads. I also believe that you'll want to put new lifters in with the cam, since the wear patterns on the lifters and cam go together. I'd be interested to see if it's been done without taking the heads off by anyone.

You only get wear patterns on flat tappet lifters of yester-year. The roller lifters can be reused if you don't drastically change the profile or go to a solid roller cam.

I think it would be pretty hard to do a cam swap with the heads on, but I'm sure there are some crafty people around here that have.
