Rumors are that Paul walker was at a charity benefit and his friend was driving the Pporsche lost control, hit a light pole, and burst into flames.

Neither, but can't help to wonder how the viper would have been killed if they were driving one. The media would headline "Viper kills Paul Walker" then it would go on as why the viper horrendous handling is the culprit. Haven't we heard this before! So now we have "Porsche owner" kill Paul Walker instead. The GT with all of its reputation and a professional driver at the wheel went up in flames. Goes to show you, if you don't respect the machine it will bite you. RIP..PW we"ll miss you.

Actually, the media IS doing this with the Porsche CGT. I have heard at least two anchors saying: "we're hearing reports that the car (the GT) is a "difficult" car to drive, even for a professional driver."

Just heard on the news today that scene investigators suspect that the porsche's power steering unit failed catastrophically, as there was a slick of fluid on the ground leading up to the impact point but no skid marks. Not a fluid leak; an outright rupture which would probably have caused the steering wheel to lock up.

I doubt that the steering failed. The Carrera GT has one of the best steering systems. This car needs respect just like our Vipers with so much power on tap. The driver got carried away unfortunately. Local Porsche tech [ also a race car driver and instructor] takes one to the track owned by an owner who never dared taking the car to its limit. The cc brakes need to be warmed before they perform best. The car really is for the track with those brakes. The guys just pulled out on the street probably not letting enough time for the brakes function right.

From what I've read as well, the car has exchanged hands 6 times, they had just bought it. My guess is the car had old tires on it. No traction + high speed turn = disaster.

The people claiming it was "a failure of the car" are from the org that owns the car, AE. My guess is they are trying to place blame on Porsche, seeing as the insurers of the F&F7 movie will be out for money to recoup their loss.

I fear you may be right. My first thought as well was "tires". Even in SoCal, if the tires weren't warmed up, there could have been a traction issues. This hits home for many of us, especially those of us who attend shows and charity events like that. I've seen many people "peel out" of car shows. This just simply awful , and my prayers to the their families.

Sort of adds up with the "no skidmark" comments many are making.

Sad all around.

The folks saying they "don't feel sorry for them" (I am not a fan of road racing) - must never do anything dumb while driving. No texting, hands at 10 and 2, always on the speed limit. Anything can happen...

Even if the tires were in good shape, they were probably "summer" tires which have crap traction in temps < 70 degrees. The last time I had my Viper out this year it was in the mid 50s and the Corsas would break loose even with modest acceleration in 1st and 2nd gear. That place at the time of the accident, the temps were probably in the high 50s to low 60s. Of course, there is still the issue of a fluid trail leading up to the impact point, which suggests the tires were not the primary issue. The car could have been modified and incorrectly reassembled...or possibly even sabotaged.

I think that this is something that should be discussed but out of respect for the families perhaps the OP could use the advanced edit function and change the title a bit. Regardless of why and how it happened I doubt that anyone wanted to die or kill anyone.

With that said, there is a bit of a black humor (Kurt Vonnegut, J.P. Donleavy, Joseph Heller)aspect to that part of the title that says "Porsche owner" implying that if it had been a Viper owner driving, the event would not have happened. Was that intended?

Peer, you are correct about the tires. This was my first thought. My PS2s are squirlley until warmed up, and in colder temps, I NEVER attempt anything resembling performance driving. Don't know what tires were on the car, or how old they were.

CNN has a very inflammatory (IMO) front page article this morning about the Carrera GT. Interesting, that everything they say about the car you could say about the Viper (through Gen 4) as well. The article has a very "anti-sports car" slant to it.

I don't see the CNN article as having a anti-sports car bias myself. It just describes the car. I have read another couple of articles ( Autoweek & Jalopnik ) where Graham Rahal describes the car to be a challenge to drive; so, the CNN article was particular subdued, in my opinion, rather than inflammatory (bad choice of adjective maybe in this case.) Nothing like: "Porsche kills driver."

And yes, the Viper is characterized in the VCA forum as having similar characteristics and dangerous in many similar ways. But so are guns.

Just read that Jalopnik article. Wow, our Vipers sound tame in comparison to the way the CGT is described in that piece.

Like I said before ,the Carrera GT needs a warm up lap for the brakes to perform. These two guys just bought the car and taking it for a shakedown cruise as someone quoted. You don't shake down a Carrera GT on the street, you taking it to the track to make sure everything is in order. I know the driver had racing experience with different Porsche cars.

here's the car I'm familiar with. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GYs60qhsWJM

I have driven one. The clutch is the most difficult in the context of a launch that I have ever encountered. It is very sensitive. The car is a beast - in a good way - like the Viper. It, as does the Viper before the Gen V, definitely requires an advanced driving skill set to drive it safely at speed.

There were 6 Carrera GT's sold in Vancouver, three of them were destroyed in a very short time by inexperienced owners. The other three needed new clutches [ 30K a pop ] Since the GT can be shifted without clutching, owners were speed shifting them to get best times out of the car at the tracks.:drive:
Most of the owners are asians ,so money isn't an issue for them :smirk:

Wowee. I've been on a few drag races in those kind of areas, never got near 100, way too narrow for that.
