I've been looking at the crossover since I have it out and it would seem to me that coolant would flow to the radiator regardless of if the thermostat is open or not since it is before the thermo housing, is this correct?
So here we are now at the end of Part I with the crossover, thermostat and housing on the bench ready for cleaning and new gaskets. I'm breaking for the night so will keep the thread going until I'm finished, hope this helps some future Gen 1 owners :D
Next step is to go after the crossover. This step is optional, but mine was leaking a bit so good ole' Chuck sent me the gaskets for it as well :2tu::usa::headbang:
Go after which ever side you want first, there are 2 torq bolts on each side holding the crossover in place. I again used a...
I should have stated before that thermo comes out you have to remove the 3 torq screws from the back. The top and driver's side was easy, but the passenger side required going in from the driver's side around the back of the motor with a series of extensions and a wobbler on my socket. Once...
Next was time to get the hoses out that run to the thermostat, this was a bit of a bitch, it is just really tight in there. I had to buy a pretty big set of needle nose pliers that would get in a tight space and still open wide enough to get the clamp rings off. Then I gently pried up the ends...
Hey Everyone,
So I started my new thermostat project today and I thought, "why not document it" for those that would like to see it. I know I would have and couldn't find where someone had done it yet. Don't know if this will be helpful to anyone but hoped it might be so here we go, will...
Thanks guys, this is the first chance I've had to respond, I did ask Chuck Tator and he said absolutely NOT to drill a hole so I'm not going to, hope this helps anyone searching in the future like I was, thanks for all the replies.
Can some of you elaborate on the vent hole I understand it is to aid in releasing trapped air but I'd like to "understand" it more. I looked for a diagram or write up but can't find anything on it specific to gen 1's and in general terms, either people recommend it or don't. Seems you are in...
That is true, just thought 1 year was pretty soon to change, especially with only a few thousand miles, but hell if I have to drain it anyway your right just put new in, thanks.
Figured it was the OEM one but wanted to ask, thanks for the clarification. What was the vent hole for on the OEM one, sorry if that is obvious, but I'm thinking if it was on the thermo iteself there would be no way to access it so it couldn't be for bleeding the system or anything could it?
Steve, thanks for the tip. Maybe I should just drain it all if that is what everyone else does, I just thought it made sense to only drain enough to work :dunno:
Thanks, I used the drain the first time and didn't have a problem, it would be much more controlled if I used that again. My thought was to only remove just enough coolant to do the job, not all the coolant in the system which is what would happen if I pulled the lower hose. I just changed the...
Got all my parts from Tator and would like to do it this weekend. Just wanted to know about how much fluid should be drained so I can take off the hoses and thermo without coolant spilling everywhere. The car is a 94.
Thanks!
Cool story, I only had to drive mine about 250 miles home, a longer trip would have been fun! Loved the pics to illustrate the story, congrats and welcome!
Can I ask you a question about the intercoolers? I was looking at the pics and just wondering how much air flow they get in that position? I'm toying with the notion of doing a build similar on a DD for the fun/learning of it and have been researching for quite a while and was just wondering...
I definitely see both sides. On one hand I bought my viper with less the 9K miles (gen 1) but drive it all the time with no plans of not driving it. But I also see wanting to eventually get what you have out of something and the only way to do that is to "preserve" it for resale and if that...
