Battery replacement-What\'s this wire for?(pics)

Just replaced my battery with an Optima Redtop. The top posts cleared the frame so no modifications were needed. I noticed there is a wire harness attached to the back vertical part of the battery tray towards the rear. The harness ends with a flat piece of plastic and has a spring clip pushing it towards the battery. Anyone know what this is for? With the Optima its not pressing flat against the battery like it would with a flat sided battery.

I believe it's the temperature sensor to monitor the battery for overheating. Kinda hard to get it to contact the "six pack" config of the Optima, but we've never had an issue.

Nuts, I just did that exact job last night on my viper, that smaller 75/35 is all you need.

Yup, that is the temperature sensor... I wonder what happens in an over-temp situation, just the battery light?

Thanks! I won't worry about it then.

One thing I noticed after installing the new battery is that the engine idles smoother.

The temp sensor helps the ECU properly regulate the battery charge.

The temp sensor helps the ECU properly regulate the battery charge.

If this is the case, does that mean that there's a possibility of overcharging? The sensor is not flat against the case of the Optima, the edge of it is touching the last cylinder.

Don't know how the regulator is programmed to charge without an accurate temp input. I wouldn't worry as many have done this mod and I'd guess it's more of a backup safety device anyway.

Curious though what the Optima useful life is in our application.......

If I were to get the same life out of the Optima as I did out of the stock battery I'd be happy. Six years on the original battery...but then I had it on a Battery Tender.

It shouldn't be an issue, you can slide the battery to align with the sensor.
