Hi,

I'm looking to have dashcam and backup camera installed in my 2001 RT/10. I can source the hardware but the installation itself seems to be above my skill and confidence level. Any recommendations for a shop with RT/10 experience?

Thanks!

What dashcam do you have? As they are just powered from the cigarette lighter.

The backup cam is a little more involved but you now talking about drilling holes and tapping wires.

Dashcam is Thinkware U3000, front and rear, I have it connected via cig lighter right now, but I’d like to have it hardwired with the external battery so I can use parking mode. But that opens the questions on how to hide cabling, where to go for power, obd2 or fuse box etc.

Backup camera I understand is quite complicated, which is why I’m trying to figure out if there’s anyone local that can help me out or should I just go with one of those license plate battery powered ones for now.

Backup is not that complicated. It is power from the main camera and is not strictly a backup camera but also a recording camera so tapping into reverse lights is not needed.

All you now to do is power the main unit and run the wire to the rear camera. No cutting holes. Just fish the wire for the rear through the window frame down the piler and along the side of the passenger side sill.

You just need to determine how you want to power the main unit.

I’ve never took the car apart, so it’s hard for me to visualize your advice.

Rear is currently mounted on the sports bar, so running the cable down the pilar and under the side sill and back up and across to the middle should be kinda possible. No clue how to get under the trim on the windshield part…

On the backup side, I cant imagine how to run a cable from license plate mount in the cabin without drilling.

I just tuck the wire under the trim without removing it as we do not have airbags to be considered about.

Can you try the backup cam just on the rear window?

And how often do you drive at night?

When I checked it felt like the trim was glued to the windshield, I could run the wire next to the trim and be almost invisible but not under. Maybe I could somehow fish it though the rear mirror cable hole.

Backup cam on the window won’t really help me with parking, which is what I’d like it for. I’d keep the rear on the window as rear dashcam.

I don't actively drive at night, but it can be quite common during the winter months when it gets dark fast.

See about pulling 1 of the license plate lights and you can fish it through that.
