California\'s exhaust noise testing program to begin in July

Here's an FYI from SEMA News:

Sources at the California Bureau of Automotive Repair (BAR) reported that the agency plans to begin operation of its exhaust noise testing program on or around July 1. BAR will issue a regulation later this year to provide for the cost to consumers for performing the test. However, tests performed prior to the official establishment of the testing fee will be performed at no cost to consumers. The program is a product of a SEMA-sponsored law that requires smog check stations that provide referee functions to perform exhaust noise testing. Referee stations will issue certificates of compliance for vehicles when tests of their exhaust systems demonstrate that they emit no more than 95-decibels, under SAE test procedure J1169. Only those vehicles that have received a citation for an exhaust noise violation will be permitted to submit their vehicle for the test. The law also allows courts to dismiss citations for exhaust systems that have been tested and for which a certificate of compliance has been issued. SEMA is working with BAR to publicize the program and will publish a list of testing sites and other critical details as that information becomes available.

More laws = more government.

Is there any wonder that state is bankrupt?

When are they going to pass laws to get all the old 60's hippie vans chugging tons of black smoke off the road. If CA really cracked down on this they could probally get back in the black.

California, the legislature is a little nuts out here. We supposedly have the most stringent emissions poilicies in the country, yet we have the #1 & #2 cities that have the worst air quality in the country. Go figure.

My stock Z06 would hit 92 db as measured by the sound booth at Laguna Seca. Isn't the sound level a function of so way too many factors? I mean shortshifting will lower your noise level. Getting off the throttle will do it too. How far from the car is the receiver going to be? Will they measure the sound while the car is idling, or will they rev the engine? But doesn't the sound change when the car is actually in gear?
Anyone know?
