Changing Air Filters on 98 RT/10 for 1st Time

I know this may end up being a silly question, but are there any tricks or issues I should know about before changing the air filters on my 98 RT/10? I'm changing to smooth tubes at the same time, so is it easier to just disconnect the tubes and remove so its easier to remove and replace the air box.

Being known as kind of a "bull," I'd rather know before I break something!

Yes, remove tubes, replace filters, install new tubes. Its a really tight fit, even when I'm just cleaning my air filters, I remove the tubes so I can get the airbox open and filters out. New filters and tubes should get ya 10HP

On my '01 I take the airbox and tubes out together. That is of course because I already heave the smooth tubes which are relatively rigid when compared to the convoluted OE tubes. So I loosen the clamps at the throttle bodies and just leave the tubes on the airbox and out they come together. It makes going back in easier if you put a little silicone grease on the inside of the smooth tubes where they go over the throttle bodies. Just a light film, these aren't wheel bearings you're lubing. Finally, make sure everything is pushed firmly back toward the engine before tightening the 3 airbox screws, as if not, it can prevent your hood from closing properly.

And OK. One more note. Be sure to get the single airbox screw by the engine belt tight. I had mine come loose and go through the belt. Dave's big Brakes has billet screws with stainless hex's in them for tightening. Do I have them? Uh, yup...

A lot of owners discover the "footlocker clips" on the top or bottom of the box may be missing (8 total) If the snap-in hinge feet on the airbox are OK it is easy to pop-in the new clips.

Ham-****** (as you claim?) guys BE CAREFUL when opening these clips! They can fly off and hide places.....the bottom ones are the worst. Put one finger on hings end before lifting the latch end. HINT: Put a dab of black silicone sealer on the top of each hinge-pin. Let it cure. Then, when you open the clips the feet-pins stay put.

Inside the silicone hoses, at both ends, spread one drop of ATF or oil to make them slide-on the airbox and TBs a lot easier. You will be able to install and align hoses easier with the lube.

Be sure the replacement filters are aligned...some few folks say KNs fit too tight, but have tried em backwards! The tight fit is important, but they only go in one way. If your airbox is old and saggy, that drop-of-lube on the inside box perimeter or the filter makes it easier.

Thanks guys, great tips. Having been a Vette guy for years, I am used to working on things in tight places (and losing things, never to be found again).

So, all the tips are great to know.

And, yes, I'm not far from Chuck and he does all the "work" to the car, but changing filters and tubes...geez, I gotta be able to do that being a motorhead from way back.
