Diagnosis in from Dealer on my \'98 GTS

Took the Viper Tech for a ride and he heard and felt the stronger than usual click or slight clunk when shifting into 4th or 5th. I dropped car off and they just called and said they hear a strong whine when the car is in 5th. They are installing a new transmission and have already ordered it, WOW!

You might want to think about a rebuild and try to keep the numbers matching. Some years from now, it will help the resale.

I asked about that and they said that Dodge doesn't repair transmissions, just new ones..???

I've also never hear of ppl checking number matching transmissions? I've heard of Engines, but transmissions?

Oh ya! Some people will care. If the numbers stamped on it, some people will look for it.

Here is what the manual states on transmission identification....

Page 21-1

"Located on the left side of the aluminum tail housing is a cast pad. The pad has the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) stamped on it - Fig #1 (shows picture of location). This number should match the vehicle identification number on the dash pad.
A bar code tag is also located on the left side of the transmission case. These numbers should be used when ordering parts for the transmission."


However, it does seem that it would be easier and quicker to ship a new one to the dealer and have your car off the road for the shortest possible time?
