Light degreaser with a rags works..If you want you can take a small spray bottle with some water and lightly spray areas to help with the job if you want to be meticulous..

I use my central vacuum with a couple of different soft brush attachments. works great for road dust, grit, and little tiny stones that mysteriously find there way to areas around the engine and front top of the side sills.

I spray it down with a hose and wipe it down with a soapy cloth and then rinse with the hose. Never had a problem yet and the engine compartment stays clean.

I hose mine down. Only time I had a problem was when I used a cleaner (citrus base). Got a check engine light and the headlamp fogged up for a week.

When things dried out everthing was fine.
