Sounds like you're on the right track. You can also try disconnecting the light green wire from where you had spliced the dark and light together when installing the aftermarket twin fans. I haven't looked at a wiring diagram to see what circuits are connected if you wire those together. There's probably a reason they run them as two seperate wires.
