Ford\'s Retro Concepts (Dodge\'s Been there, Done That)

I was watching tv tonight and saw a segment on Ford's new concept cars. One was the new Shelby Cobra, the other a new Shelby Daytona Coupe.

Funny, but the Viper RT/10 really is the second coming of the Shelby Cobra, and only a blind man wouldn't recognize that the Viper GTS is the direct descendant of the Daytona Coupe. Ford is headed into territory already fully explored by Dodge.

The Cobra concept is, in my opinion, butt ugly, and no amount of horsepower will change that. I can't imagine they will really build it. The GR1, however, is quite nice. Rumored to be due out in 2007, as production of the GT tapers off. With a 605 horsepower V-10 engine, the GR1 might be just the thing for performance car folks pining for a Dodge Viper Coupe. Hopefully, Dodge will get the message, pick up the gauntlet, and respond with something really cool.

I used to lust after European exotics. However, with the Viper and the GT available now, and such other treats on the horizon, I think I could be satisfied completely with good old American iron for a long long time to come.

My opinion on the cars you mentioned-
Concept Cobra= Ugly, needs a redesign
Ford GT= World class exotic
Ford GR1= Wild and exciting

Whats happening right now in autos is mind blowing. I remember when we thought the muscle car was dead, we went through a nuclear winter of sorts in the 70s with the "smog dogs", then it all started to get better in the 80s with fuel injection, then the Viper came along in 1989, and now there are many cool cars coming out, and the HP wars are aiming at 600. This could well be the best era in all of automotive history, and we are living in it now.

Unfortunately the Cobra Concept almost certainly won't be built, and the prospects of the GR-1 being built are slim to none as well(regardless of what magazines think).

However, I saw Ford GT designer Camillo Pardo recently and he's working on another sports car, although he couldn't say what! :usa:

I agree with that fortunately the nuclear winter seems to be over---although I am always cautious, since I really didn't seem to foresee the 60s muscle ever ending. Chrysler has finally gotten the message that it's "the power, stupid" that people want.

The only problem with all these concept cars is that they ain't cheap. I am heartened by the fact that the 300c will soon have a 425hp engine. In any case, keep it coming.

I have been told that the Cobra Concept WILL be built, but, not by Ford or distributed through Ford dealers. Built by Shelby in Vegas and distributed through Shelby dealers. Brent, the top guy at Shelby, told me this while Carroll was sitting there.

The GR-1 is simply the reskinned Daisy (concept cobra). I've not heard anything about that being built, however, I have heard that Shelby will do another Coupe.

I'm anxious to hear about the Shelby KR500 2005/6 supercharged Mustang though.

I also agree that this competition will make all brands involved much better. I'm just holding on for the ride!!! :headbang:

the viper is the second coming of the cobra in terms of looks only. it is not a ford car and the cobra was a ford car. even in the looks depatrment the new shelby/ford GR-1 looks more like a cobra daytona coupe than a gen II viper gts does to me.

i like my viper very much and will never sell it, but if shelby/ford puts the new GR-1 into production i will buy it and park it right next to my viper :)

Except for some retro designs, the words "Ford" and "Styling" just do not go together. Check out the new 500...YIKES!!!

Sure the 2005 Ford 500 is one fugly mobile but the Ford GR-1-Concept car is a different story. Wonder if it will make it to the line.

Yeah, a bit of a shame that Ford pussed out on the original 500 styling. Tried to make a big VW or Audi clone. Luckily the current styling won't be around long as Ford is incorporating the three strake grille a la Ford 427 as their new design language. That said, it is still an utterly fantastic sedan to drive for sub 25k. Roomy, comfortable, decent go, very nice interior. American automakers are really redifining the quality of their sedans right now.

Ugh, don't think so. The original Cobra was built from an A/C with a ford engine. When you are comparing looks the basis is definitely the A/C. The Ford with a Cobra name was a Mustang.
