Hi All...I'm sure most of you already know this, but thought if it even helped one person, it would be with the post. Since the automobile luxury tax is NO longer in effect, I did some research on it. I happen to be looking for a 2001/2002 and have found some still at the dealerships, untitled. Some people thought the tax was due based on the YEAR...but it is NOT. It is based on WHEN you purchase. So, like me, if you bought an untitled 2001/2002, etc NOW, there would be NO luxury tax due. That might just make the deal a little sweeter for some!

Interesting post...I didn't know the luxury tax had gone away...yea!

However, is there still the 'gas guzzler' tax on 'new' untitled cars?

It's my understanding that the "gas guzzler tax" is here to stay. As for luxury tax, I don't know the old rate of taxation, but heard it was as high as $5,000. So, saving that gives you some pocket change for new exhaust, shifter, and other goodies!

The gas guzzler tax of $3,000 still applies to untitled '02's. I think it's the same for '01's as well. Something to consider when a dealer gives you a "clearance" deal on a new '02.

the trick is to find a 01/02 that the dealer has titled yet it has little to no miles on it so the gas tax doesn't apply.

singed,

that's what I did.

Toby...yes, that is an ideal way to purchase. I just wanted to point out the "no luxury tax" issue for anyone that finds an untitled car. Saving the gas guzzler tax would be frosting on the cake! Hmmmm...could buy more mods!

GTSREDDOG...no, haven't seen any yellow GTSs yet, but if so, I will let you know.

I do not know why we have to pay gas guzzler tax?? My car gets up to 20mpg on the open highway. I know that Toyota Tundras get less than that and we do not get that tax on them.

If you are only getting 12 is it because you are hitting the "go pedal" too hard? If so, then you have been a bad boy and must be sentenced to 30 days behind the wheel of a Kia Rio. That'll teach you.
