Interesting indeed. I have been in sales management in the telecommunications field for several years (17). Definitely not a dime a dozen, depending on your field of expertise. The whole industry is very diverse and always expanding. You might try to leverage your experience into related fields. If your telecom includes some data background, look into some Internet positions. Not necessarily the dot.com business per se, but those that make the Internet run. Even though the dot.coms have suffered of late, you will notice that the Internet wasn't turned off.

Indeed, I just lost one of my sales managers in Chicago after she was recruited by an e-commerce company that offered her a $15K raise on base and another $30K in target comp. A quick search on
monster.com shows a ton of telecom related jobs. Throw in companies like broadband suppliers, wireless ethernet expansions, etc., and you have more stuff to choose from than you ever have before.
Sorry to hear of your predicament, but as Doug pointed out - it will turn out to be a blessing. I wish I could say my company is hiring, but we are doing a different kind of expansion right now. Good luck!
Chris
PS. And to keep this topical, I would point out that three of our local Viper Club members are in telecom. Not bad!
