I definitely recommend you upgrade your half shafts if you have plan to run more than stock power or use drag radials or slicks. I broke two heavy duty half shafts making only 466 rwhp with stock radials. The second time it took a chunk out of my differential housing.

I, like you, believe that it's better to break a half shaft than to blow the transmission or something else, but I believe the stock half shafts leave a lot to be desired in terms of strength.

I also recommend the half shaft loops. They're relatively inexpensive and buy you a lot of security.

why upgrade? are the stock halfshafts that lousy? also, if something were to break wouldnt it be better a halfshaft than something really expensive? whats the likelihood of a halfshaft breaking anyway, with a daily driver? is this a logical upgrade with a SC?

If you do a search there was a pretty long thread on halfshafts.
Yes i'd rather half a halfshaft/u joint go ( I also have safety loops) than a tranny or rear end, but if you are on it with nitrous or s/c and the stock half shafts always break, it won't be much fun either. With slicks halfshafts have broken even on mildly modified cars.
