Depends on when the vehicle was listed "in-service" by the dealer. If they used it as a "demo", the warranty may have aallready started.

From what I understand, once a dealer pays the note, it's "in service" regardless of whether it was ever titled or driven.

If a car is "unsold" (Still on MSO) at a dealer, DC put's it "In Service" after two years. They figure that if the dealer has had it that long, they must be using it :) . The dealer can request that the in service date be changed through a request to the poweres that be at the time of sale, but, as I understand.... it does not need to be approved. If they "see" 500 miles on the car, it is possble that it might not be.

Bill Pemberton, chime in?

Worst case on this car, is one year of the warranty would be "gone".

I just found out the car was put in service a while ago and the warranty is almost up.

So I guess it doesn't matter if its titled or not.

Thanks!

Janni...its not in NC.

my first question now would be why was the dealer
not upfront with you on this to start with. seems
a little questionable at this point. just my opinion
but i would run and not walk away from this deal.
good luck

Not true with Toyota do not know about Dodge. The two year thing sounds like it could be correct.

In every instance I can remember, 24 months and dcx starts the warranty.

Send me the vin and I can tell you if it is "in service" or not.

I can only speak of my own experience with DC. I recently purchased, in October of 2003, a 97 GTS, still new on the dealers showroom floor, less than 200 miles on the clock, still on the MSO.

The dealership owner told me that until they send in a little card, it has a special name I can't remember it, but until DC gets that, stating it's been sold and who it was sold to, no warranty starts, period. The two year issue was a specific question I asked about, everyone kept telling me that two year issue would be the case.

My local Dodge Dealership Owner, a club member, checked it out via my vin and verified it did in fact go into service the day I picked it up in Oct. of 2003 and that I also had the full factory bumper to bumper coverage just like any new Viper going out the door.

I can't speak for all cases, this is just what happened in my case.

Enjoy the car! :2tu:

A three year old "new" Viper, with 500 miles, sitting in a showroom, never titled,
shouldn't be worth very much more than a used three year old Viper with very low miles.

With 500 miles it really isn't new titled or not. Someone used it and that's a lot of miles for a Viper demo car.

Since the extended warranty can be had, why worry about the factory warranty start date?

So many people don't want to talk prices on the board. This is another example of a topic where the selling price means everything.

DC does start the warranty ticker when it puts it in service after two years, I just talked to Roanoke Motors about it a few weeks ago. Your experience varifies the second part of what I said, the in service date can be corrected. Do you have your warranty paperwork back yet?? I would be interested in seeing "what" warranty you get as in '97 the warranty was a lot diffent than in Oct of '03.

Jay,

Hope all was well during your sunny, warm Holiday!

I haven't registered the car yet. The car is still on MSO sitting inside an ICED shut garage door, so I don't have anything back! :(

The owner of Bud Brown Dodge, one of our local dealerships and club member, ran my VIN and said the "in service" date showed Oct. 2003 on their computer system, what ever the day I picked it up was. I took that as good enough, maybe it's not that simple???

I took it from his e-mail as a 3 year - 36K miles bumper to bumper warranty. I don't know what the 03/04 warranty program is. 7/70? I'll send you a copy of the e-mail he sent me when I get to work on Monday. Read it over if I am not covered let me know, as I would buy one if possible, but I was led to belive I'm covered.

Details, Details.....At 150 MPH + I don't have time to worry about my stinking warranty!!!! LOL :D

Sorry, Jay I got you and Tony mixed up on who was in the SUNNY KEYS for the Holidays!

Jay, you've got mail! I would have posted the e-mail in this post, but I don't know how. Out smarted by the computer once again! :D (not hard to do)

It's the e-mail from the owner of Bud Brown (my local Dodge Dealership) from when he ran my VIN and stated my warranty started on October 27, 2003. Please read the e-mail, if I missed anything, or did not understand it correctly, let me know asap. I've been wrong before, I'm sure I'll be wrong again before taking my long dirt nap.

-----

I purchased the car in good faith based on what Bill Kile of Kile Dodge told me about the warranty. He said that until the NVDR (New Vehicle Delivery Report) gets sent to DC no warranty is started. He went as far as saying if a vehicle sat on his floor for 10 years and then he sold it and sent in the NVDR it would be covered under warranty. I felt that Bill was honest and a good person, I hope I don't find out differently.

----

The NVDR (New Vehicle Delivery Report) was what I was referring to in my first post in this thread, I just couldn't recall the name until I pulled up the old e-mails from when this went on.

Update:

I spoke with Bill Kile today about 2:40 pm central time, Bill owns Kile Dodge where I bought my new leftover GTS. Jay's comments made me a little nervous, I do consider him to be one of the experts in the forums, and I wanted to make sure I was correct in my understanding and my comments I posted here. Prior to calling Bill I called a third Dodge dealer that has nothing at stake in my deal and I asked them to tell me when my warranty ends. (this will come a little later in this post)

I asked Bill, "You sure I got a full warranty with this car, what about this two years and the warranty starts thing I keep hearing about?" Bill said to me, "Ryck, since I've been a Dodge dealer in 1979, there has never been any kind of two year then the warranty automatically starts policy. If I have a car that was built in 1984 sitting here right now and I sell it, and it's never been registered, sold, or titled, the buyer will get a full factory warranty, Dodge has always operated that way as far as I can remember being an owner."

This Two year window and the warranty automatically starts issue seems to be an overwhelming rumor that needs to be STOPPED. I was told the same thing by at least three people back when buying this 97. And guess what, I have a full 3 year 36,000 mile and then some warranty, including roadside assistance.

The dealer I called today I had fax me a copy of what he pulled up on the computer. It is called the VIP Summary Report, he used my VIN to pull up this info. It's a block and box format. Meaning there are big rectangles on the paper with titles in them and then boxes under those with information in them.

I'd be happy to fax this Dodge Warranty Document to anyone that could use it for their benefit while trying to purchase a new "leftover" Viper.

The moral to this post...Don't just assume that a New "Leftover" Viper won't have a warranty. I Don't believe the - After two years the warranty starts rumor, that's clearly not the case with my purchase. The dealership owner said he's never seen such a policy since owing the dealership in 1979, two dealerships have independantly confirmed my warranty started on Oct 27, 2003 and runs until Oct 27, 2006. Dig in, check it out for your self if you're buying a "leftover" Viper.

We have sold quite a few new cars that were older than two years ( we purchased from other Dealers ), and the warranty always started when the car was finally sold. I know of 2 customers who bought 98s a year or so ago, and they got the full warranty. I would have to agree with Mr. Sanders that warranties begin when the MSO is assigned. The only problem could occur if a Dealer sent in a car as sold, and it wasn't. This may take some real finagling to get DC to correct, as once in the computer, amazingly it is hard to adjust.
