Tom, you have a good start. get work history from Dodge and check owner history. Check out the following sites for TSB's and recalls for what you are looking for. They can give an idea of potential problem areas as well as information. Things the 96-97 car should have had done may be replacing the intake gasket, changing the trans fluid to minimize the ngr, update the cooling fan, flash on the ecu, etc. as applicable.

Why do you want to go all the way to the east coast to buy your warrenty. Give John Gastman a call at Roanoke Motors in Roanoke Illinois and he will not only give you a good deal on a warrenty but also on a used Viper. Roanoke Motors is either #1 or #2 in the country with regards to selling new and used Vipers. Dave the Viper Tech at Roanoke(works on Vipers exclusively) is also tops in the Midwest. If you have any other ? give me a call at 847-823-1651.

As far as warranties go, when I bought my new 99 GTS, a 6 year 60,000 mile extended powertrain warranty was $1500, and it's transferrable.

Tom,
You may still be able to find a 97 under original factory warranty. I bought my 97 GTS in August of 2000 and just bought a transferable 7/50 Maxicare warranty for 1465$ from Larry Valdez at Stevens Creek Dodge in San Jose. As you can see, the warrenty price goes up significantly after the 3/36 is over. I found my GTS at autotrader.com but there are alot more good examples in the club classifieds. I don't know of any other methods of checking out the car other then you listed, but having a local Viper tech look it over would be a good idea. I didn't the car i bought seemed well cared for and was still under warrenty so I figured I couldn't go too wrong.

I recently looked at a 1996 GTS with 20K miles for a potential new VCA member. He had some unexpected expenses and could not buy it. Its nice car with a clean history, 20K nice easy miles, no wheel damage, side sills clean - even underneath. My understanding is that is can be had for $50K. Nice car - email me for details.
