Oil change; how many qts?

Owner's manual says 7.5 qts w/filter. I have a yellow card "Owner's manual addendum" that states 8.5 w/filter. My viper teck put in 9 qts when I took it in for my first oil change (Which was $100). Trying to save a buck or two, I want to do it myself. Obvious answer is pull the dipstick after 8,8.5,9, etc. So...... how much oil do you put into a 96' GTS?

I used 8.75 qt last time I changed the oil in my GTS. This put it just below full on the stick.

You are fine. The correct amount is 8.5 for your car, but many dealers will go to 9 qts. due to the breathing characteristics and the sloshing at high g loads. We put 9 in all the older models and 10 in the 2001's ( has the improved oil pan with baffles ), so your tech treated you right.

I have a 2001 which takes 10 qts. I have been buying the oil
(mobil 1 10w-30)in 5qt containers for only $17 each at Walmart
and a mobil 1 filter at autozone for $9 and letting my local
no bull oil change shop change it for $15 (they put it in i watch no one drives the car and they take car of disposal
total $58 better than $100 and no need for an appointment
just make sure the guys have done Vipers before and that your car will clear the pit guards; mine did just fine!!!

Thanks guys, I'll go with 9 qts (I bought the quart containers). I checked my oil the other day with about 2,000 miles since the last oil change and saw that it was right in the middle of the "o.k" range. I was a little sceptical due to the low consumption. I thought maybe the tech had put too much oil in and I really burned up more than I thought. I guess not.

Just changed the oil in my '94 RT/10 today. I used 9 quarts of Mobil 1 10W-30.

92-96R/T is 9.0 96-99GTS 97-99R/T is 8.5 and will read just below the full mark when correct. do not add extra .5 in my experence it will puke it out. 00-01R/T and GTS is 10.

Oh I forgot. Mobil-1 oil and filter change is 74.95 in my playhouse.
