Sorry for the off topic, but I have a question for those in know about new car sales. In November my stepson bought a new '01 Dakota that apparently had sat on the dealer's lot for a couple of years - the odometer statement said it had 294 miles so we just assumed it was new. Now he's trying to get some warranty service performed on the truck and there is a completely different owner name and address listed as the owner of the truck. It now strikes me that they've sold this truck once to the first guy then to us. Does this sound like we were sold a used vehicle as new?

Go look at your purchase agreement or whatever paperwork you got with the truck It should state weather they sold him a new or used vehicle.

If he did sell it to him as a new truck but knew it was used, proceed to kicking him in the nuts.

Could be they sold the truck to some guy. He drove it home and then within a day or so the financing fell through.

This happened to a buddy of mine years ago. I guess it could still happen.

Second registered owner, =USED My opinion. and if that is true, I think you should get an extended warrantee for no charge just to keep you quiet. Other wise, Is this fraud ?

Go back and ask them what they are prepared to give you to keep your mouth shut. They should be willing to cough up a fair amount to avoid criminal charges. Then as Craig mentions, proceed to kick him in the nuts!!

Run a Carfax, and see how many registered owners there are. I work in Finance here in town for one of the dealerships, give me a call and I can run it for you. We have had customers trade in cars with 200 miles on them, but we have to be sure to sell it as used, since the vehicle warranty has already started, and it is ineligable for any rebates/low APR financing, etc. I bet that's what happened, and the dealership mistakenly marked the DRS(Dealers Report of Sale/aka green slip) as new. The DMV should have noted the mistake, however. I'll be at work tomorrow around noon if you want to call me with the VIN.
